Our footy scribe previews round 33 of the 2016/17 English Premier League campaign.
We're at the business end of things as the Premier League returns for gameweek 33. The weekend’s fixtures are undoubtedly highlighted by a blockbuster between Manchester United and Chelsea on Sunday, but there are also other interesting matches and good odds on offer!
Saturday 15 April
Tottenham 1/4 | Draw 47/10 | Bournemouth 17/2
Tottenham’s winning streak at White Hart Lane extended to 11 matches in the league following an emphatic 4-0 victory over Watford. Mauricio Pochettino would have been pleased to see 19-goal striker Harry Kane return from injury, which will boost Spurs' title chances.
Bournemouth were outclassed 3-1 at home to Chelsea, leaving Eddie Howe’s side winless in three matches. These teams played to a goalless draw in October, but it’s going to be incredibly difficult for the Cherries to end Spurs’ superb home run.
Take the hosts to win on the (-1) Handicap at 13/20.
Crystal Palace 17/20 | Draw 5/2 | Leicester City 32/10
Crystal Palace boosted their top-flight survival chances by recording a shocking 3-0 win at home to Arsenal on Monday night. Sam Allardyce's side are six points clear of Swansea in 18th, and they still have a game in hand over the Welsh side. They are not quite out of the woods yet so they’ll be looking to continue their impressive form.
The Eagles have won five of their last six games in the league, including a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Leicester City’s five-match winning streak in the Premier League came to an end as they went down 4-2 at Everton last Sunday.
With both teams in goalscoring form, I’m backing Both Teams to Score at 17/20.
Everton 9/20 | Draw 33/10 | Burnley 6/1
Romelu Lukaku scored twice as Everton defeated champions Leicester City 4-2 at Goodison Park last Sunday, equalling their club record of seven straight home wins. It was a fine bounce back from their derby defeat to Liverpool and the disappointment of conceding an injury-time equaliser to Man United in their 1-1 draw last week Tuesday.
Burnley have endured a torrid slump in form, winning just once in their last 10 matches. Even more worryingly, the Clarets are yet to win away from home, losing 12 from 16 matches.
The home win is a top bet at 9/20.
Stoke 19/20 | Draw 23/10 | Hull City 29/10
Stoke will be desperate to end their recent poor form (DLLLL) against Hull City after losing at home to Liverpool. The Potters took the lead against Jurgen Klopp’s side late on in the first half courtesy of a Jon Walters header. However, Mark Hughes’ men fell apart after the restart, conceding two goals in two minutes to lose 2-1.
Hull’s two-match winning streak came to an end following their 3-1 defeat against Man City at the Etihad Stadium. The Tigers will be hoping to bounce back from that result but their away form doesn’t bode well for their chances. They’re winless in their last 15 travels, suffering 13 defeats – including four on the spin.
Stoke won the reverse tie 2-0 and I’m backing them to win here.
Sunderland 21/10 | Draw 47/20 | West Ham 5/4
Sunderland's survival hopes look bleaker than ever after their 3-0 home defeat against Man United. The Black Cats are 10 points from safety with just seven games left. David Moyes' side are winless in seven matches – losing six times – and have not scored in any of those games.
West Ham eased the pressure on themselves as Cheikhou Kouyate's first-half goal secured their first Premier League win in seven matches with a 1-0 win over Swansea. It was a much-needed win for Slaven Bilic who has been feeling the heat after five straight defeats left the Hammers in serious danger of being sucked into the battle at the bottom.
West Ham won the reverse fixture 1-0, but I’m backing Under 2.5 Goals at 9/10.
Watford 14/10 | Draw 22/10 | Swansea 39/20
Watford were thumped 4-0 away to Tottenham last Saturday and Walter Mazzarri will be hoping for a positive response from his players. The Hornets have won back-to-back games at Vicarage Road, beating Sunderland and West Brom, 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.
Swansea turned in a wretched performance to lose 1-0 at West Ham and put a dent in their Premier League survival chances. Paul Clement’s side, on 28 points, face a huge fight on their hands if they are going to extend their six-year run of top-flight football for another year. The Swans are winless in five matches, suffering four defeats.
Back the hosts to win at 14/10.
Southampton 33/10 | Draw 28/10 | Man City 7/10
Fraser Forster's late heroics sealed a 1-0 win for Southampton after Jordy Clasie bagged his first Premier League goal at West Brom. The victory crowned a satisfying week for Claude Puel following last Wednesday's 3-1 triumph at home to Crystal Palace.
Pep Guardiola’s side ended a four-game winless run in the Premier League with a 3-1 victory over Hull City last Saturday that boosted their hopes of finishing in a Champions League spot. The Saints will be optimistic of causing an upset against City. They won this fixture 4-2 last season and earned a 1-1 draw at the Etihad Stadium in October. However, City have more to play for and know they can’t afford to drop points.
Back the visitors to come away with maximum points.
Sunday 16 April
West Brom 32/10 | Draw 51/20 | Liverpool 8/10
West Brom’s 1-0 defeat against Southampton at the Hawthorns last Saturday means Tony Pulis’ side haven't found the net in three matches. Pulis will know his side have to improve against Liverpool or they’ll succumb to a third straight defeat.
Liverpool came from behind to beat Stoke City and stay on course for a top-four finish thanks to goals by substitutes Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino. The Reds are unbeaten in six in Premier League matches, winning four times; however, they’ve won just once in six away games. The Baggies have drawn their last three meetings at the Hawthorns against Klopp’s side.
The teams are tipped to share the spoils at 51/20.
Man United 33/20 | Draw 21/10 | Chelsea 7/4
Man United have been hugely disappointing in front of their own fans for much of the campaign. Mourinho’s side were booed off in their last encounter at Old Trafford following a 1-1 draw against Everton. That was their ninth draw at home from 16 matches and their fifth stalemate in the last six games.
Antonio Conte became the first-ever manager to do the league double over Pep Guardiola and the Italian will hope to do the same against Mourinho. The Premier League leaders will look to continue their impressive record against United and get the better of their former boss for the third time this season.
Both teams will be going all out to win, with Man United hoping to finish in the top four and Chelsea aiming to move a step closer to the Premier League title. Conte has had the upper hand over Mourinho this season and Chelsea are 12 games unbeaten against United.
Back the Blues to come away with maximum points against the Red Devils.
Monday 17 April
Middlesbrough 47/10 | Draw 32/10 | Arsenal 5/10
Arsenal succumbed to a shocking defeat on the road on Monday night, going down 3-0 to Crystal Palace as they surrendered even more of their grip on their chances of a top four finish. Arsene Wenger's side were simply bullied by Sam Allardyce's outfit, who scored through Andros Townsend, Yohan Cabaye and Luka Milivojevic as they could and should have won by more.
Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil were as bad as I’ve seen them all season, and without Laurent Koscielny, they look so poor at the back, bereft of leadership. The Gunners have lost five from their last eight Premier League matches and have lost their last four on the road. They have a real chance to bounce back against Middlesbrough who are winless in seven matches – failing to score in five of those games.
Arsenal are tipped to come away with maximum points, but you certainly can’t bank on them.
