We preview Saturday’s three Super Rugby fixtures which includes the clash between the Waratahs and Jaguares.
The playoff phase is fast approaching and this season’s run-in will be a lot more subdued than last year’s with the majority of the quarter-final participants already decided. Saturday’s three fixtures are all dead-rubbers, which hopefully means we’ll see these teams throw caution to the wind and play some enterprising rugby.
Waratahs v Jaguares | Saturday 8 July | Allianz Stadium | 11:45

First up it’s the Waratahs taking on the Jaguares, who make the trip down under off the back of a rather embarrassing loss to the Southern Kings. The visitors, after a promising start to the season, have fallen off the pace in the second half of the campaign and are currently on a three-match losing streak, with their last victory coming against the Sunwolves back in early May.
The Waratahs will be looking to round off a dreadful campaign on something of a high note. Darryl Gibson’s men have no chance of making the quarter-finals and have only pride to play for here. Gibson has resisted the temptation of blooding a few youngsters, naming an extremely formidable side for Saturday’s fixture.
Verdict: Waratahs (-14.5) 9/10
The Jags will be extremely leggy here after a long, long season that has seen them fail to live up to their billing. I’m expecting a late surge from the Waratahs to see them well past the handicap.
Bulls v Kings | Saturday 8 July | Loftus Versveld | 17:15

The two sides who impressed the most last weekend will lock horns at Loftus on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls looked a side reborn during their 17-30 victory over the Sharks in Durban while the Kings were at their gutsy best during their one point victory over the Jaguares.
There’s not much point at looking at the hosts’ form before the June Internationals as they really do look a different bunch since their return from winning the Mauritius Tens tournament. There’s also not much point in mentioning the Kings form prior to the break as they have seen a whole host of their injured players return to the field.
Verdict: Bulls (-12.5) 9/10
This game could be an absolute spectacle as both teams will be keen on running the ball. My money is on the Bulls clearing the handicap in a high scoring affair.

Our final fixture of the day sees the hapless Sunwolves travel to Newlands to take on an almost full strength Stormers side. The visitors were absolutely horrendous during their 94-7 defeat to the Lions, missing near on 60 tackles while shipping 14 tries. And the ‘Wolves will need to sort their defensive structure out if they are to keep the scoreline respectable this Saturday evening.
The Stormers also were rather frail defensively last week against the Cheetahs but they still managed to claim a 34-40 victory. Robbie Fleck’s men were extremely enterprising with ball-in-hand and could run amok this here with the Sunwolves' defence about as useful as a bunch of cardboard cut outs.
Verdict: Stormers (-38.5) 9/10
The Sunwolves are just going through the motions at this point and I can see their lackadaisical attitude leading to another hiding this weekend. There’s a bit of rain forecast for the Cape but I don’t think it will be enough to stop this Stormers side clearing the handicap.
