Alex Zverev (5) (4/10)
vs Borna Coric (21) (18/10)
Alex Zverev has suddenly been catapulted to quasi-favourite status following Novak Djokovic’s shocking disqualification. Imagine the pressure that the German must be feeling to finally reach a Grand Slam Final. Zverev has consistently underdelivered at the Grand Slam level, only ever reaching one semi-final. But that semi-final crucially came at this year’s Aussie Open. His year since- such as it is- has been as disappointing as the majority of his 2019 campaign: he seems to have been surpassed by the likes of Thiem and Medvedev in the quest for Grand Slam glory. Aside from a tricky first-round tie against Kevin Anderson, this year’s draw has been kind to the German. Zverev destroyed Davidovich Fokina in the last match, which should give him added confidence going into this vital quarterfinal match. But he will certainly need to pick up his level against Borna Coric. I fully expect him to throw in some serve-and-volleys against Coric, a player who has shown the ability to absorb his vicious groundstrokes in the past.
The story of day 7 of this year’s US Open will forever be that of Novak Djokovic. But let’s spare a thought for Croatian Borna Coric, who gave yet another workmanlike performance in defeating Jordan Thompson. This is now his best Grand Slam run, beating his 2018 4th round finish here. Lest we forget, this is the man who pulled off the ‘great escape’ of this year’s tournament, fending off six match points against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Coric looked like one of the players to watch a few years back. He beat Roger Federer twice in 2018, in the process claiming the Halle title and reaching the final of the Shanghai Masters (he also reached the semi-finals at Indian Wells that year). A back injury derailed his progress in 2019, though he did return to reach the St Petersburg Final towards the end of the year. But it looks like the pugnacious Croatian may be back to his best. He also knows that he holds a positive record against his next opponent.
Coric actually leads the head-to-head against Zverev 3-1. He won their most recent match in Halle 2018. This gives me reason to believe that this could be upset country. Coric’s defensive acumen make him a frustrating puzzle for the aggressive Zverev. Zverev just has a knack of falling at this stage of Grand Slams.
Pablo Carreno Busta (20) (29/20)
vs Denis Shapovalov (12) (5/10)
Regardless of what happened in the rest of Carreno Busta’s career, it would appear as if he has already appeared in his most famous match. Novak Djokovic’s ‘full-throated’ endorsement of the US Open ball-girls has led to a nearly supernatural occurrence. We enter the 2nd week of the US Open without Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Novak Djokovic. Carreno-Busta- the beneficiary of Djokovic’s shenanigans- was almost eliminated in the opening round against the unheralded Uchiyama. But he has improved as the event has gone on, actually dominating Novak in many of their first set rallies. Much like Bautista Agut, Carreno Busta is yet another Spanish breaker who subverts the Spanish clay-court stereotype. Three of his four titles have come on hardcourts (including last year’s Chengdu Open). He has reached the semi-final stage of both the Indian Wells and Miami Masters. He has already reached a semi-final in Rotterdam earlier this season. But his piece de resistance came in 2017 on these very courts, where he fought his way to a brilliant semi-final finish. Carreno Busta- like all the other mere mortals- will know that he will never have a better chance to claim that elusive Grand Slam title.
It feels like yesterday that Denis Shapovalov was bursting onto the scene at the 2017 Canadian Open (accounting for the likes of Nadal and Del Potro in the process). The sheer talent at his disposal was unquestionable. The real issue was this: could he harness all that raw ability into a fully-rounded game? He has risen through the rankings off the back of impressive results in prestige events (though his consistency throughout the calendar has been suspect). He reached Masters 1000 semi-finals at Madrid (2018) and Miami (2019). But it was towards the end of 2019 that Shapovalov started to fully blossom. He won his debut title in Stockholm prior to a run to the Paris Masters Final. In typically Shapovalov fashion, 2020 had been somewhat disappointing in the wake of the Paris Masters. But the lockdown period may have allowed his coaching staff to zone in on his more erratic qualities. Against Goffin in the last round he was able to balance his penchant for big-hitting with some more controlled tennis (not every shot has to be a winner). He showed his true Grand Slam potential whilst simultaneously revealing Goffin’s limitations.
Pablo Carreno Busta leads the head-to-head with Shapovalov at 3-1. More importantly, he has won all three of their matches on hardcourts (the last of which came in Vienna last year). That combined with the Spaniard’s comparatively brief time on court makes him the best option here. Carreno Busta to win in four at 11/2 may be worth a shot.
