Wow, wow, wow! If last weekend’s Premier League action didn’t convince you that this is the best league in the world, nothing will. A total of 43 goals were scored, including three seven-goal thrillers.
Liverpool were the big winners of the weekend, claiming a vital victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while Leicester City, Arsenal, Everton and Crystal Palace, who upset Manchester United at Old Trafford, also maintained their 100 percent record. Let’s see what the third round of Premier League football has to offer. If its half as good as the last one, we’re in for a treat!
Saturday 3 October
Chelsea 9/20
Draw 38/10
Crystal Palace 57/10
It’s been a rocky start to the new season for Frank Lampard at Chelsea. The Blues won 3-1 against Brighton in a match they looked second best, got a red card in their 2-0 defeat to Liverpool and had to dig deep to level matters after they were 3-0 down at half-time to West Brom last weekend.
At the moment, they don’t look like the team we all expected them to be at the start of the campaign. Crystal Palace have looked sharp so far and have made those who tipped them to go down reconsider. They come off the back of a 2-1 home defeat to Everton, but before that, they beat Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford. Both Teams to Score at 15/20 is well worth a punt here.
Everton 15/20
Draw 28/10
Brighton 15/4
Everton have been the talk of the town and its easy to see why. Carlo Ancelotti has changed the mood of the camp, brought in the likes of James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure, which has now seen the Toffees playing like a top-level Champions League team. Everton have won all three of their ties, while Brighton, despite their great performances against Chelsea and Manchester United, have been the unluckiest team in the division, beating only Newcastle this season.
They’ve shown that they know how to score this term with Neal Maupay already on three goals for the campaign. Everton look to be a dark horse for the top four places, but their goalkeeping department and defence could be their only downfall. I say Everton to Win & Both Teams to Score for this one at 24/10.
Leeds 15/2
Draw 5/1
Manchester City 3/10
Two of arguably the most entertaining teams do battle this Saturday with plenty of goals expected at Elland Road with Leeds hosting Manchester City. Since the Peacocks’ return to the top flight, a Marcelo Bielsa vs Pep Guardiola tie is all we’ve ever dreamed of. Guardiola once described Bielsa as his mentor and the best manager in the world.
After City’s 5-2 drubbing against Leicester City, the Sky Blues need a massive response, especially with Liverpool already making up ground on them. Their defence looked like a division two backline, while Leeds have been banging in goals for fun, most notably in their opening fixture of the campaign, where they lost 4-3 against Liverpool at Anfield. Leeds to Score In Both Halves at 9/2 offers plenty of value and is certainly possible, considering how the campaign has gone thus far.
Newcastle 15/10
Draw 21/10
Burnley 2/1
Newcastle United were full value for their stalemate earned at Tottenham last weekend. Karl Darlow kept the Magpies in the game and his hard work paid off as Steve Bruce’s men were gifted a penalty in the dying stages of the match. Burnley are a week behind schedule with the Clarets only playing twice this season. Still, Sean Dyche’s men should have looked better as they’ve lost both ties this term, against Leicester City and Southampton. There hasn’t been much draws in the Premier League so far, but these are two sides I cannot separate.
Sunday 4 October
Southampton 15/20
Draw 29/10
West Brom 36/10
Southampton registered their first win of the campaign with an impressive 1-0 victory at Turf Moor over Burnley. The Saints desperately needed that after getting battered 5-2 at home to Tottenham the week before. It gave Southampton a wake-up call, similar to the 9-0 drubbing they received last year against Leicester City.
West Brom produced one of the upsets of the weekend, moving off the bottom of the table after earning a 3-3 draw against Chelsea. The Baggies held a half-time lead of 3-0 and will perhaps be disappointed to end that match with just a point. There’s plenty of concern over West Brom’s backline, but no negative comments on their forwards whatsoever. Both Teams to Score looks a sure bet at 19/20.
Leicester City 7/10
Draw 31/10
West Ham 15/4
Leicester City have been flying high and have silenced many doubters questioning whether they can compete for a Champions League spot this season. The Foxes sit on top of the table at this early stage, winning all three of their matches, including a resounding 5-2 victory at Manchester City last time out.
West Ham also come off the back of a surprise victory, thumping Wolves 4-0. Before that, they gave an excellent account of themselves in their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal. Leicester have just been too good, though. With home advantage as well, I’ll put them in all my weekend multiples at 7/10.
Arsenal 11/20
Draw 3/1
Sheffield United 52/10
Arsenal will be hoping to return to winning ways when they host Sheffield United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. The Gunners’ first defeat of the campaign came on Monday night as Mikel Arteta’s men lost 3-1 at Anfield to Liverpool.
Arteta lost his very first game at home as Gunners boss, since then, he’s won eight of the 10 games played, drawing against Sheffield United and Leicester. The Blades have lost all three of their matches in the league so far, and are the only team in the division yet to score a single goal. Arsenal should claim maximum points at 11/20.
Wolves 11/20
Draw 29/10
Fulham 57/10
Wolves have had a disappointing start to the new campaign, losing two of their opening three matches, including last weekend’s 4-0 hammering by West Ham and against Manchester City, where they lost 3-1 at home. Wolves have been dreadful, but luckily, they play arguably the worst team in the division. Fulham have lost all three encounters, sit bottom of the log, and play on Thursday in the Carabao Cup. Wolves are out of the tournament and will have a full week to prepare for this tie. I’m making Wolves my banker of the weekend.
Man United 9/10
Draw 26/10
Tottenham 29/10
Aston Villa 17/2
Draw 9/2
Liverpool 3/10
Aston Villa will be hoping to maintain their record of being the only team yet to concede in the Premier League when they host Liverpool at Villa Park. The Villans have beaten Sheffield United 1-0, and put Fulham to the sword on Monday, winning 3-0.
Liverpool also have a perfect record this term and will come into this tie off the back of wins over Chelsea and Arsenal. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both have three goals to their name, and you can certainly back one of them, if not both, to add to their tally on Sunday. I fancy the Reds to Score in Both Halves at 9/10 here.
TREBLE @ 3/1
Leicester City Win 7/10
Arsenal Win 11/20
Wolves Win 11/20
