The final set of 2017 Women’s World Cup fixture go down this Saturday. We look at all the matches.
The 2017 Women’s World Cup will come to a close in Ireland this Saturday, and what a tournament it has been. We’ve been treated to some awesome rugby action already but things will certainly heat up this Saturday with New Zealand and England locking horns in the final while France and America will square off in the third and fourth place play-off.
Japan v Hong Kong | Saturday 26 August | 11th-Place Play-Off | Queen’s University | 13:00
To Win (80 Mins)
Japan 1/20 | Draw 28/1 | Hong Kong 14/1 * Please note expected odds
Asian rivals Japan and Hong Kong will square off in the game no one wanted to be in this Saturday. The two sides have endured rather horrid campaigns with neither side yet to win a game. Thankfully, though, one of these sides will break their tournament duck this week as if the game ends in a draw their will be extra time.
Verdict: Japan 1/20 * Please note expected odds
While Japan are yet to win a game at the tournament, they have shown more ability than their opponents who have been run ragged by everyone they’ve met. My money is on the Japanese Women’s side taking this one by 14 points or more.
Ireland v Wales | Saturday 26 August | 7th-Place Play-Off | Kingspan Stadium | 15:00
To Win (80 Mins)
Ireland 2/13 | Draw 18/1 | Wales 47/10
Ireland and Wales will go head-to-head in an all Six Nations affair at the Kingspan this Saturday. The two sides come into this one off the back of disappointing defeats with the tournament hosts going down 24-36 to Australia and Wales unable to score a solitary point as they went down 52-0 to Canada.
Verdict: Ireland 2/13
The Irish ladies were far from their best against Australia but I’m expecting them to bounce back against a beleaguered Welsh outfit.
Italy v Spain | Saturday 26 August | 9th-Place Play-Off | Queen’s University | 15:30
To Win (80 Min)
Italy | Draw | Spain * Odds to be added on release
We have another all European affair up next with Italy and Spain set to lock horns in the ninth-place play-off. The two sides have already met during the 2017 Women’s World Cup with Spain running out 22-8 victors in one of the most shocking results the tournament has seen thus far. Both teams’ head into this one off the back of positive results with Italy beating Japan 22-0 and Spain beating Hong Kong 31-7.
Verdict: Italy
My money is on the Italians getting their revenge over their European counter-parts with a win here.
Australia v Canada | Saturday 26 August | 5th-Place Play-Off | Queen’s University | 18:00
To Win (80 Mins)
Australia 3/1 | Draw 16/1 | Canada 3/10
Australia and Canada will lock horns in the fifth-place play-off. The Wallaroos managed to beat host nation Ireland in the last round, with the 12-point victory seeing them claim a berth in the fifth-place play-off. The Canadians also come into this one off the back of an impressive win as they dismantled Wales, running out 52-0 victors.
Verdict: Canada 3/10
Canada will have way too much firepower for this plucky yet limited Australian Women’s side to deal with. My money is on the ladies from the ‘Great White North’ taking this one easily and should score more than 20 points.
France v USA | Saturday 26 August | Bronze Final | Kingspan Stadium | 18:00
To Win (80 Mins)
France 1/8 | Draw 20/1 | USA 6/1
Next up we have what will be the most one-sided Bronze final to take place at any World Cup. France come into this one off the back of a red-hot tournament while I’m still wondering how the USA made it to the semi-final. And while the French did falter at the second last hurdle, going down to England by 20-3, they have been a lot more impressive the USA ladies who come into this one off the back of a 45-12 defeat to New Zealand.
Verdict France 1/8
The French women will canter to a victory here.
New Zealand v England | Saturday 26 August | Final | Kingspan Stadium | 20:45
To Win (80 Mins)
New Zealand 27/20 | Draw 16/1 | England 13/20
The most successful team in the tournament take on the reigning champions at the Kingspan, in what should be a thrilling conclusion to the 2017 Women’s World Cup. Neither of the sides are yet to lose a game and both have racked up some mammoth totals on their way to the final. Speaking of mammoth totals, the New Zealand women underlined their attacking prowess with a 45-12 victory over the USA women’s side in the semi-finals. England also put in an eye-catching shift in the semis which saw them runout 20-3 victors over the French.
Verdict: New Zealand 27/20
This is likely to be an extremely close affair. England have been resolute on defence but are yet to yet to be tested by the best in the women’s game. I can see the Black Ferns attacking prowess seeing them past the English this Saturday.
