Our footy writer previews four eye-catching 2018 World Cup qualifiers that are worth a dabble.
Club football goes on hold as the international break returns with the national teams looking to move a step closer to qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. I’ve picked out four matches that are well worth a punt this week. Read and fire!
Friday 1 September
World Cup Qualifier (CONMEBOL)
Brazil 1/4 | Draw 9/2 | Ecuador 10/1 (02:45)
Brazil host Ecuador in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday with coach Tite naming a strong 23-man squad, despite the Selecao been assured of their place in Russia. Neymar will captain his country for the first time since completing a world-record €222 million transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain.
The Brazilians are leading the South American qualification table by nine points over second-placed Colombia, who they’ll face on Tuesday 5 September. Brazil have won 10 of their 14 matches played, losing just once (2-0 against Chile in their opening qualifier). They’ve scored the most goals (35), while conceding the fewest (10). Ecuador are sixth on the standings (W6 D2 L6) and have failed to beat Brazil in their last eight meetings, suffering six defeats.
Back the Brazilians to oust their opponents.
World Cup Qualifier (UEFA)
Czech Republic 11/2 | Draw 32/10 | Germany 9/20 (20:45)
Germany take on Czech Republic in Prague on Friday night in a 2018 World Cup qualifier. Karel Jarolim's side are third in Group C, with two wins, three draws and a defeat from six games played. The Germans are top of the log with a 100 percent record, scoring 27 goals while conceding just once.
Joachim Low has retained 17 members of his triumphant Confederations Cup squad, while Mats Hummels, Thomas Muller, Mario Gomez, Sami Khedira, Toni Kroos and Mesut Ozil all return. Muller bagged a brace while Kroos was also on target in Germany’s emphatic victory over the Czechs in October last year.
Back the Germans to win at 9/20.
World Cup Qualifier (UEFA)
Denmark 5/4 | Draw 9/4 | Poland 21/10 (20:45)
Group E leaders Poland travel to Copenhagen to face Denmark on Friday. The Danes are third on the standings with 10 points, level with Montenegro, but behind on goal difference. Age Hareide's side will be hoping to capitalize on home advantage as they look to hand the Eagles their first defeat in the qualifying group.
Adam Nawalka’s side are top of the log with 16 points in six matches, scoring 15 goals – 11 coming from Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski. Poland have won the last two meetings against Denmark, both by 3-2 scorelines.
However, both of those matches were played in Poland, therefore, avoid picking a winner and take Both Teams to Score at 8/10.
Saturday 2 September
World Cup Qualifier (UEFA)
Wales 12/10 | Draw 21/10 | Austria 49/20 (20:45)
Wales host Austria at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday in a crucial World Cup qualifier. The sides are level on eight points in Group D, four behind Serbia and Republic of Ireland, with four matches left to play. Both teams desperately need a win to maintain their hopes of qualifying for next year’s showpiece in Russia.
The Dragons have managed to win just once, drawing five times from six matches, while the Austrians have won two, drawn two and lost two. When these sides met in October last year, Wales were twice pegged back by Marko Arnautovic as Austria held Chris Coleman’s side to a 2-2 draw in Vienna.
A tight affair is expected with the draw tipped at 21/10.
QUAD TIPPED @ 94/10
Brazil Win 1/4
Germany Win 9/20
Denmark vs Poland BTTS 8/10
Wales vs Austria Draw 21/10
