Aphiwe Dyanti grabs consecutive man of the match awards
The Lions winger scored a brace as the Gauteng franchise claimed a 47–27 win against the Jaguares at Emirates Airline Park. The former Varsity Cup star burst on to the Super Rugby scene this year in for the injured Courtnall Skosan. Scoring a brilliant try against the Sharks where he outran Jacques Vermeulen before kicking a grubber past Robert du Preez to pick up and score.
Dyanti’s try against the Jaguares raised more eyebrows as he ran 70 metres to score after finished off his move with a huge inside step to beat the last man to score. Dyanti has beaten 14 defenders so far and is the current leading try scorer with three. It’s still early days but it will be interesting to see how the rest of his season pans out.
Bulls hush the doubters
The Blue Bulls under John Mitchell performed what some thought to be a miracle when they narrowly beat the Hurricanes at Loftus.

What should’ve been a routine lineout throw turned into a disaster in the 80th minute when the hooker threw it over his players and found a Waratahs player. The Waratahs built momentum in the Stormers 22 before Hanigan scored in the corner after breaking Raymond Rhule’s tackle and reaching over the edesperate defence from the Stormers. 34 – 27 it ended, very unfortunate for the Capetonians. The going gets tougher for the Cape side as they face defending champions, Crusaders this weekend.
Jaguares keep racking up the yellow cards
The Jaguars can’t seem to keep themselves out of trouble, they’ve let the same ill-discipline from last season trickle back into their game. This past weekend they received two yellows to add to the one they were handed in their opener against the Stormers. This weekend they host the Hurricanes in Argentina in a match that could potentially ignite their season.
Highlanders could be the team to beat this year
The Highlanders showed their mettle to hold off the Blues in a 75-point thriller. The match was a great advertisement for the New Zealander’s style of running rugby, as the lead changed hands a number of times. The Highlanders, however, eventually won with five tries to the Blues four with Thompson and Walden the standouts, each scoring a brace. The Highlanders enjoy a bye this week before hosting the Stormers.
