While the Proteas have had an abundance of pace talent for some time, the white ball regenesis of Dale Steyn just in time for the World Cup could give the team a timely boost.
Steyn has bowled very well with the white ball from late 2018 into 2019 but for all the promise he has shown, hasn't delivered an ODI-winning performance, at least not with the ball.
The Phalaborwa Express hasn't taken four wickets or more in an ODI innings since September 2014 - and his last five-wicket haul in the format came in 2013.
The positivity around the veteran in the format is not without foundation, though. His three for 45 against Australia in Hobart showed that he can still snuff out a challenge, if not completely turn the tide of an ODI battle.
Steyn will form some part of the Proteas' death bowling strategy at the World Cup, but concerns over his fitness might see him used rotationally in the round-robin phase. Ottis Gibson and the selectors have ensured that Faf du Plessis has plenty of pace at his disposal for the tournament, but Steyn is undoubtedly the senior bowler.
It was the arrival of Gibson that served as the great catalyst for Steyn to get back into the ODI set-up. The West Indian coach has a very clear pace bias that goes beyond the Test arena, where the quicks are still king.
Steyn helped his own cause by making an impressive start to the Mzansi Super League, having played his part in an ODI series win in Australia in November last year. He formed a lethal partnership with young pace prospect Anrich Nortje.
Nortje credits Steyn as a massive influence on his career and will be afforded another opportunity to learn from the fast-bowling legend at the World Cup.
As far as big worries go, fitness remains at the head of the list, while the ghosts of his ill-fated final over in the 2015 semi-final might also need to be banished.
He has made an immediate impact in the Indian Premier League for a Royal Challengers Bangalore side that found themselves under pressure after a poor start to their campaign.
Steyn's presence in any squad adds so much more than just his on-field performance - and he has shown that in the Proteas set-up as well as for the Titans and now RCB.
The Proteas will have all his experience and morale-boosting presence at their disposal for the World Cup and, what's more, they should also have Steyn back to his very best ODI form once again.
