We preview the Rocket Mortgage Open taking place at the Detroit Golf Club between 27 and 30 June 2019.
The 2019 US PGA Tour | Rocket Mortgage Open | Detroit Golf Club, Detroit, Michigan
Were it not for the presence of the Waste Management Open, this would likely be the most inauspiciously named event on the tour. Be that as it may, this will be the inaugural staging of this event. It replaces the Quicken Loans National in the schedule: Francisco Molinari won the Quicken Loans last season in a precursor to his Open Championship triumph. This will also be the first event of the Open qualifying series, where two non-exempt players stand the chance to backdoor straight Open qualification. Perhaps of more importance is the significance of this event to the city of Detroit. It will the first PGA event staged in the recently downtrodden city for nearly ten years.
There is little to go on as far as course details are concerned. It is said to be a tree-lined affair with smallish poa annua greens. It is a Donald Ross design and is comprised of two courses- the North and South Course. In reality, only one hole from the markedly smaller South Course is being utilized this week. The par 72 layout seems fairly standard at 7,340 yards. Having said that, the par 5 fourth measures a staggering 635 yards and is the seonnd-longest hole on the PGA Tour. Quality iron players have generally done well on Ross layouts. If players are able to avoid trouble from the tee they will be in prime position to attack the smallish greens. While the power of Dustin Johnson could humble any course, one should expect the accurate hitters to thrive in a generally diminished field.
Dustin Johnson is clearly the favourite going into this week. The All-American gunslinger will be licking his lips at the prospect of a field with Chez Reavie amongst the favourites. Meaning no disrespect to last week’s winner, but this is one of the weaker fields you will see on tour outside of the early stages. Recently crowned US Open Champion Gary Woodland will be looking to come back down to earth this week. Ricky Fowler will be wondering what he has to do to finally claim a Major trophy. It must have sickened the perennial contender somewhat that Major acolyte Woodland handled the pressure with such consummate ease.
To Win Outright:
Dustin Johnson 6/1 | Ricky Fowler 12/1 | Gary Woodland 14/1 | Hideki Matsuyama 14/1 | Chez Reavie 25/1
Value Bets
Kevin Streelman- To Win (45/1), To Place (19/2)
The ever-reliable Streelman is just the sort of man to watch in these diminished events. He is extremely consistent and favours accuracy, making him a potentially strong contender in this admittedly difficult week for speculation. Streelman has four top 15 finishes in his last seven starts. That included a solo 4th at the Memorial and a tie for 15th at last week’s Travellers event. He was 20th in shots gained tee to green around TPC River Highlands, which should set him up perfectly this week.
Sepp Straka- To Win (200/1), To Place (43/1)
Sepp Straka is a rather intriguing one. He is actually currently in a state of national limbo, unsure of whether he would play as an American or European should he ever flirt with Ryder Cup contention. The Austrian has enjoyed a recent uplift in form that could potentially propel him inside the top 150 of the FedEx Cup standings. He contended for the first two rounds of the Canadian Open and then carried that improved form into Pebble Beach. He finished in an excellent tie for 28th, which included a blistering final round of 67. He currently sits 29th in shots gained approach on tour. Straka looks like unbelievable value in the place markets.
The Man to Beat- Ryan Moore- To Win (33/1), To Place (7/1)
This just looks like the type of tournament that Ryan Moore will revel in. And not just because he has shown an affinity for Donald Ross courses in the past. The five-time PGA Tour winner has been on the cusp of re-joining the winner’s circle this season, with a 2nd and 3rd place finish thus far. He currently sits 3rd on tour for fairways hit, which by my estimation should be a leading index in determining this week’s champion. Dustin Johnson just looks too short for me. Woodland may find it difficult to keep the adrenalin pumping while Ricky is hard to back as an outright winner. Moore has a nonchalant demeanour that could serve him very well this week.
