Neil Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips for Saturday's racing coming your way from the Ayr, Newbury, and Newmarket.
Race 2: No5 - LORD GLITTERS
Trainer: David O’Meara - Jockey: Danny Tudhope
This Doonside Cup looks a three-cornered battle between Addeybb, Fox Chairman and LORD GLITTERS. The best race of the Western meeting so far will provide fascinating viewing, with much travelled Addeybb the likely market leader with a cut in the ground looking almost assured. Against that the chestnut has to carry a Group 1 penalty and that 7lb could tilt the scales towards one of his opponents. Fox Chairman is feared for his consistency, but the grey Lord Glitters might prove the value option. He’s been given a select campaign waiting for opportunities like this through the autumn, and can roll back the years to show he’s still capable of cutting it against fellow Group 1 winners.
Race 4: SCOTTY BRAND FIRTH OF CLYDE FILLIES’ STAKES (Group 3)
No4 - ILLYKATO (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon - Jockey: Tom Marquand
With 15 fillies set to power down the Ayr straight this looks a complicated affair, but ILLYKATO is capable of taking home a cheque if running as well as she’s been working at home. The Toronado filly picked up some brownie points when an unlucky-in-running third in the Dick Poole Stakes at Salisbury, which is also a Group 3. Her trainer’s decision to target this Group 3 over the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes can prove to be a wise one.
Race 5: QTS AYR GOLD CUP HANDICAP
No7 - BARBILL (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Channon - Jockey: Franny Norton
Conditions look ideal for
BARBILL to run a big race and get into the shake-up of the most historic Flat race run in Scotland. The four-year-old landed handicaps at Haydock and Chester either side of a disastrous run in the Stewards’ Cup, but when contesting the Portland at Doncaster last week met with interference leaving the stalls. That reverse failed to stop him getting to within four and a half lengths of the winner Stone Of Destiny, and without it he would surely have gained a frame finish, suggesting he can have a big say in the day’s betting jamboree.
NEWBURY
Race 1: No1 - AERION POWER
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute - Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa
Stoute fired out a couple of juvenile scorers at Sandown earlier in the week, and while this is a much tougher contest with all the top stables represented, AERION POWER can live up to the promise of his debut second at Kempton. Take Kingman colt showed tell take signs of greenness on that occasion and has shown in his subsequent work that it’s taught him plenty.
Race 5: DUBAI DUTY FREE MILL REEF STAKES (Group 2)
No8 - RHYTHM MASTER
Trainer: Richard Fahey - Jockey: PJ McDonald
Key to the outcome of a race that remembers one of the best juveniles ever to run at Newbury in the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville in which RHYTHM MASTER finished a creditable third to the exciting filly Campanelle. Having bolted up on debut at Haydock, the Dark Angel colt displayed signs of greenness in France but nevertheless had the more experienced Cairn Gorm several lengths behind. The latter received a nasty bang leaving the gate that day, but possibly not enough of an excuse to suggest he can turn the tables.
Race 6: No8 - SIAM FOX
Trainer: Richard Hannon - Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa
SIAM FOX has the points on the board going into this maiden with a creditable first run behind him and makes plenty of appeal. His second to Akamai at Ascot has worked out, and with his stable in the process of sending out the cream of its juvenile crop he has a good chance to open his account.
NEWMARKET
Race 1: No3 - MONSOON MOON
Trainer: John Gosden - Jockey: Ryan Moore
Many fingers were burned on Kingman filly MONSOON MOON when she was beaten on debut at Ascot. However, that third to Love Is You begs to be improved upon as she will be a lot more streetwise, and can take this fillies’ novice on the way to better things.
Race 5: No4 - FOLK DANCE
Trainer: David Simcock - Jockey: Jamie Spencer
FOLK DANCE has indicated in her last three starts that she is a filly worth following through the final weeks of the season. By Derby hero Golden Horn out of a Singspiel mare, she showed a liking for this course when opening her account last month and ran into a smart foe in Waliyak at Lingfield. She’s in similar waters in this Class 3, but without a rival of that ability taking her on.
