We take a look at the second set of 2017/18 French Ligue 1 fixtures, which get underway this Friday evening.
The headline story to come out of French football this week has been the signing off Neymar by PSG. The former Barcelona star has moved to the French capital in search of a Ballon d’Or but his hefty price tag means there will be pressure on him to hit the ground running.
With all the attention surrounding Neymar, it’s easy to forget that there’s a full set of fixtures to look forward to this coming weekend.
Friday 11 August
Nice 11/20 | Draw 29/10 | Troyes 47/10 (19:00)
Nice really did disappoint last week as they went down 1-0 to a handy yet limited St. Etienne outfit. Les Aiglons will have to up their performance tenfold this week as they will take on a Troyes outfit who will be on something of a high having held Stade Rennes to a 1-1 draw.
Nice really let me down last week, so I’m rather worried about tipping them again.
As such I’m going to get on the Both Teams to Score – Yes – market which is available at a healthy 19/20.
Rennes 29/10 | Draw 26/10 | Lyon 17/20 (20:45)
Next up it’s the impressive Lyon taking on rigid Rennes. The hosts come into this one off the back of a 1-1 draw with new boys Troyes while Lyon make the trip off the back of resounding 4-0 victory over Strasbourg.
Lyon’s 4-0 victory showed that there’s still plenty of firepower left in their ranks despite talismanic striker Alexandre Lacazzete having moved to greener pastures.
I’m going to back the away side to register successive victories – get on at 17/20!
Nantes 51/20 | Draw 23/10 | Marseille 21/20 (17:00)
Nates and Marseille will get Saturday’s action underway at the Stade de Beaujore. The hosts come into this one off the back of a 3-0 loss to Lille while Marseille had a much better time of it during the opening week of the season as they beat Dijon 3-0.
Marseille really did look good this past week and should have no problems seeing off Nantes. 21/20 offers decent value here.
Toulouse 12/10 | Draw 9/4 | Montpellier 9/4 (20:00)
Toulouse will be looking to build on a solid performance against Monaco when they play host to Montpellier this Saturday evening. The hosts may not have been able to register a win against the defending champions during the opening weekend but they did give them a run for them money going down 3-2 in the Principality. Montpellier, unlike Toulouse, managed to get their campaign off to a wining start with a routine 1-0 victory over Caen.
This I a game that could go either way for me so
I’m going to avoid the outright winner market and play it safe by backing the Both Teams to Score – Yes – market at a tidy 17/20.
Amiens 18/10 | Draw 2/1 | Angers 33/20
Next up its Amiens versus Angers in a game that I could see its fair share of goals if last week’s performances by the two sides are anything to go by. The hosts come into this one off the back of shipping two against PSG while the visitors also come into this one having let two in against Bordeaux, although they did manage to score two of their own.
I’m going to tuck in to the Totals - Over 2.5 Goals – market which is currently trading at a very kind 27/10.
Bordeaux 9/20 | Draw 4/10 | Metz 11/2 (20:00)
The bookmakers have installed Bordeaux as heavy favourites to beat Metz this Saturday and it’s hard to argue against them as Metz looked rather underdone last Saturday during their 1-3 home defeat to Guingamp. And while Bordeaux failed to register a win over Angers in the opening game, they did hold on for a draw.
I’m siding with the books here and backing Bordeaux for the win. They are rather short at 9/20 but should really canter to a victory.
Sunday 13 August
Strasbourg 24/10 | Draw 43/20 | Lille 12/10 (15:00)
A highly impressive Lille side, who come into this one off the back of a 3-0 victory over Nantes, make the trip to take on Strasbourg, who went down 4-0 to Lyon in gameweek 1, in this Sunday’s opener.
I’m not going to go into any further detail here as I think Lille have this one in the bag. Get on the away win at a solid 12/10!
Dijon 9/2 | Draw 31/10 | Monaco 11/20
The penultimate fixture for gameweek two sees Monaco tackle Dijon. The visitors were nowhere near as good as they were last season in the opening fixture of their 2017/18 campaign but they still managed to bag the three points in a high-scoring affair against Toulouse. Dijon didn’t fare quite as well last week as they went down 3-0 to Marseille in an extremely one-sided affair.
Like I said last week, it’s highly unlikely that Monaco will be as competitive as they were last season. They will still have way too much firepower for Dijon to cope with, however. Get on the away win at 11/20!
Guingamp 9/1 | Draw 47/10 | PSG 1/ 4 (21:00)
The world’s most expensive player and his new teammates will clash with Guingamp in the final fixture of the gameweek. Yes, PSG made it official this past week signing want away Barcelona star Neymar for a world record fee. And while it’s not confirmed whether the Brazilian hitman will start the fixture, he will almost certainly get on the field.
Away from Neymar now and moving onto the stats, and both sides come into this one off the back of wins with the visitors beating Amiens 2-0 last Friday and Guingamp beating Metz 3-1. Despite Guingamp registering a solid opening day performance,
I can’t help but tip PSG on the -1 handicap here. They really are a class above and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they go through the season unbeaten.
Treble @ 6/1
Lyon Win
Lille Win
PSG (-1)
