Our football pundit previews the French Ligue 1 week four action which kicks off on Friday 25 August 2017.
The international break will soon be upon us which is rather upsetting. The dull nature of international football is hard to endure especially when fans have been sipping from the cup of the European elites for the past four weeks, Nonetheless, it will soon be all over and the regular broadcast will resume. We also have one more set of Ligue 1 fixtures before the dreaded window makes an appearance, and this looks like one to saviour.
Friday 25 August
PSG 1/8 | Draw 15/2 | Saint Etienne 23/1
The bookies certainly do fancy the home side here! I mean they’re 1/8 for the win and the visitors are a massive 23/1 to claim victory despite winning all three of their games. And while I would usually take a R10 strike on St. Etienne just because of the absurd price, I can’t, just like the bookmakers, see them claiming a win against a PSG side that has scored 11 goals in three games. As such, I’ve been forced to look elsewhere for value and the one market that stands out is the Additional Totals – Over 3.5 – which is trading at a solid if not spectacular 13/20.
Saturday 26 August
Nantes 26/10 | Draw 49/20 | Lyon 1/1
Lyon will be looking to tone for last week’s horror show against Bordeaux when they take on a Nantes side who claimed their first win of the season by beating new boys Troyes 1-0. Lyon were unbeaten up until last week and I think they will bounce back right away. Get on the away win at a healthy 1/1!
Dijon 15/10 | Draw 43/20 | Montpellier 19/10
Dijon and Montpellier lock horns at the Stade Gaston Gerade this Saturday evening. The hosts come into this one off the back of a 2-2 draw with Rennes which saw them claim only their second point of the season. Montpellier also come into this one off the back of a draw but they will be far more disappointed with dropping points at home to Strasbourg than Dijon will be with their draw. Dijon really look to be suffering from second season syndrome, and while their draw against Rennes was slightly impressive I just can’t help but feel they’ll struggle to back it up this weekend. As such, I’m on the away win at 19/10!
Bordeaux 5/10 | Draw 31/10 | Troyes 52/10
Bordeaux and Troyes are next up to do battle and the hosts are much-fancied here being up at 5/10 for the win. The shortness isn’t at all surprising considering Bordeaux are yet to lose a game this season while Troyes come into this one off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to Nantes. Troyes seemed to run out of gas in their last fixture and I think life in the big time may be taking its toll on the players. As such, my money is on Bordeaux claiming the win here.
Toulouse 5/4 | Draw 43/20 | Rennes 47/20
Toulouse will be looking for only their second win of the season when they play host to a Stade Rennes outfit who are yet to bag a three-pointer this term. The hosts come into this one off the back of a 6-2 hammering at the hands of PSG while Rennes make the trip having drawn 2-2 with Dijon. Like last week’s games involving these two sides, I think we will see goals here. The Totals – Over 2.5 – Goals market is trading at 5/4, which is a gift in my opinion.
Caen 15/20 | Draw 26/10 | Metz 38/10
Caen and Metz lock horns in a game that could influence the relegation battle quite significantly despite it being played so early in the season. The hosts have managed one win from their opening three games while the visitors are yet to even muster up a draw. I just think Metz are going to come good this weekend. Call it gut feel. Call it being swayed by a big price. Whatever you want to call it, my money is on the away win here.
Amiens 26/10 | Draw 23/10 | Nice 11/10
Saturday’s final fixture sees new boys Amiens take on a Nice side who claimed their first win of the season last weekend. The hosts currently occupy the last spot on the table, while Nice’s gameweek 3 victory saw them move up to 11th spot on the table. Nice seemed to turn the corner last weekend, putting in a solid display against Guingamp. And my money is on them claiming back-to-back wins.
Sunday 27 August
Guingamp 9/10 | Draw 24/10 | Strasbourg 31/10
Sunday’s first fixture will see Guingamp take on Strasbourg. The hosts have lost two of their opening three fixtures while the visitors have only tasted defeat once thus far. Both teams are scoring and conceding at a rate of over a goal per game. As such, I’m all over the Both Teams to Score – Yes – market at 9/10.
Angers 5/4 | 22/10 | Lille 23/10
The penultimate fixture of gameweek 4 sees Angers take on Lille. Angers have enjoyed a solid start to the 2017/18 campaign, winning once and drawing their other two games.
Lille haven’t been quite as solid and come into this one off the back of successive defeats. I fancy the home side to bag the points here. Lille have look discernibly average in the last two weeks while Angers have continued to impress.
Monaco 11/20 | Draw 32/10 | Marseille 17/4
Monaco and Marseille will bring the curtain down on this round of Ligue 1 action when they lock horns in the Principality late on Sunday evening. The hosts have won all three of the games they have played this term with their latest victory coming away to Metz.
Marseille also come into this one undefeated but their winning streak was curtailed last week as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Angers. Monaco have managed to pick up from where they left off last season. The men from the French Principality have been in great nick and should be backed to go into the international break with four wins under their belts.
