Scotland and France will bring the curtain down on Round 2 of the 2018 Six Nations when they clash at Murrayfield on Sunday 11 February.
One of the most curious games in quite some time takes place at Murrayfield on Sunday, as Scotland and France battle it out following the peculiar events of Round One. Scotland were taught a rugby lesson by the Welsh - and this after supposedly coming into the tournament as ‘dark horses’- in an eventual 34-7 loss while France were undone by a Johnny Sexton drop-goal hailed by commentator Stuart Barnes as one of the greatest of all time. All is set for another cracker in Edinburgh.

The outcome of Saturday’s fixture between Wales and Scotland wasn’t exactly expected. Far from it. Indeed, I went as far as to suggest that one would have to be “insane” to bet against a Scottish side that, this past November, fell short by five-points of beating the All Blacks one week, and then put a record score over the Wallabies in another. Couple this with Wales’ missing six injured British Lions and you’d struggle not to afford me some kind of exoneration for my statements.
Alas, Wales were fantastic on the day while Scotland produced arguably their most disappointing match in over 18-months. Their loose, inaccurate game was exposed superbly by their hosts who, realistically, had the game won by halftime.
Gregor Townsend was left fuming after his side’s showing but France visiting Murrayfield this week offers him an opportunity to earn some respite. Considering the quality at his disposal, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Townsend’s boys come back firing with a performance that befits their talent. But, following the results of last week, I’m not sure whether I quite know anything anymore.
France
The look on Guilhem Guriado’s face at the final whistle of their clash with Ireland said it all. France’s skipper was left heartbroken by the outcome of the meeting in Paris and, quite frankly, it’s easy to sympathize with him. His team put on one hell of a show and were literally inches away from claiming what would have been a remarkable result. Unfortunately for fans of Le Bleu, Johnny Sexton’s otherworldly 84th-minute drop-kick ensured that Jacques Brunel’s reign as national coach got off to a losing start.
Naturally, France will need to put the heartache behind them and come roaring back in Edinburgh ahead of this one. They certainly have the pedigree to challenge the Scots and, in wingers, Teddy Thomas and Virimi Vakatawa, possess the necessary bulk out wide to give the hosts’ talented back-three plenty to think about.
I’m expecting France to throw the ball around and express themselves on attack just as they were encouraged to do last week. Without their fiery home support, however, they may just fall short.
Verdict: Scotland 9/20
Would hate to be wrong twice in a row, but Scotland should make up for last week by recording a narrow win on Sunday. There’s no good reason a side as good as theirs should lose on consecutive weekends; especially to an inexperienced French team at home. Right?
