We preview the tri-sanctioned ISPS Handa World Super 6 Perth to be played at the Lake Karrinyup Country Club.
The brainchild of European Tour ‘idea’s man’ Keith Pelley, the quirky World Super 6 format proved quite a resounding success last season. It perhaps didn’t hurt the chances of success that an Aussie eventually won the crown, but one cannot fault the ambition behind the enterprise.
The European Tour frankly cannot compete with the riches on offer stateside: they have little choice but to try alternative approaches to manufacture interest in events. Lake Karrinyup will once again play host to this co-sanctioned event between the European, Australasian and Asian Tours.

Lake Karrinyup is a picturesque course built around a lake, meaning that water will be in play on most of the holes. Thus accuracy from the tee will prove key, with players encouraged be creative in their stroke play. The event is played as a regular stroke-play event for the first two rounds, before a standard cut. The remaining players play a further stroke play round prior to yet another cut- leaving the remaining 24. The top 8 players will get a bye into the last 16, while the remaining 16 players go head-to-head in 6-hole match play format to make it into the last 16. Players will then go match play head-to-head until a champion is left.
With Thorbjorn Olesen and Lee Westwood currently leading the markets at 22/1, it is quite amazing just how tight things are up there. The almost scatterbrain nature of this event has perhaps helped in keeping the event so open. Furthermore, the PGA Tour event at Pebble Beach has greatly diminished the general quality of the field. But viewers took to the revamped formula last year, particularly the exhilarating final round of shootout golf.

Very rarely will you see a defending champion- especially in an event with such a decimated field- come in with odds this high. That’s perhaps because his victory here last season was also his last top 10 finish. So he’s hardly been in blistering form. But course familiarity and the schizophrenic nature of the event could make the defending champion even more palatable. Furthermore, there have been two further top 10 finishes at Lake Karrinyup for the 40 year-old Aussie.
Lucas Herbert- To Win 45/1, To Place 19/2
Once one of the best amateurs in the world, Herbert is in red-hot form and looks a decent prospect for this week’s event. He was sixth behind Cameron Davies in the Australian Open last year and finished in eighth place behind Sergio Garcia in Singapore on his return to action this year. That makes it four top 10 finishes in five appearances- a particularly good return considering the strength of field this week. He went down narrowly to beaten finalist Khongwatmai last year and will be brimming with confidence this season. That finish in Singapore secured an Open spot for Herbert and he is really free-rolling now.
Shiv Kapur- To Win 70/1, To Place 15/1
The Indian was well in contention at the Maybank before a poor final round of even par put pay to his chances. He still managed a respectable 23rd in his first European event of the year. His last European finish was a tie for 16th in Mauritius. He will enjoy this tight, tree-lined track- he managed a top 30 finish at this course two years ago. He looks like a decent bet in an extremely limited field, especially giving the fact that he has decent experience around an idiosyncratic course that should reward familiarity.
The Man to Beat- Thorbjorn Olesen- To Win 22/1, To Place 48/10
If there ever was a week to back the favorite, this could be the week: just look at those odds of 22/1 Olesen has course form, winning the 2014 Perth Invitational. He also has something of a pedigree for these events, leading Denmark to the World Cup title in 2016. He has also had continued success in representing Europe in both the Seve and Royal Trophy. Olesen is also a birdie machine and will take some beating when it comes to the high intensity, knockout stages.
