Selected Quarter-Finals - 5 April - 6 April 2019
Garbine Muguruza (2) vs Kristina Mlandenovic (7)
It’s quite something in these volatile days on the women's tour for a quarter to actually go according to seed. There’s something strangely comforting about it. Muguruza had to wrestle back the initiative in her last match against Gasparyan. It’s really hard to gauge where the Spaniard is at with her game. Much like Sloane Stephens, Muguruza is prone to amazing results that can emanate from nowhere. Last year’s champion has endured a frustrating year, with a quarterfinal run at Indian Wells representing her best result. She seems to struggle with replicating her Grand Slam exertions in more minor events. Her aggressive baseline play perfectly suited these slick outdoor conditions last year and she will be hoping that this can prove the springboard for an improved European clay-court campaign.
Kristina Mladenovic was pushed to the brink of elimination in that agonizing three-set victory over Brazilian Haddad Maia. But she fronted up and proceeded to routinely move past An to book this quarterfinal. Mladenovic is a former top 20 player who has achieved incredible success on the double’s circuit over the last few years: she has reached three Grand Slam Finals over the last year with Timea Babos. She now really operates likes a mercenary on the single’s tour, picking her spots to make inroads. This event is really an ideal environment for an operator like Kristina Mladenovic. The amount of elite players is diminished and players are already psychologically preparing for that momentous switch to clay. She may be feeling primed for a deep single’s run this week.
This match-up actually makes for intriguing reading on paper. The Frenchwoman holds a significant 2-0 head-to-head advantage over her more illustrious opponent. Those were curiously enough two victories on clay which one would assume would suit the energetic Muguruza. So I feel that Mladenovic could be tricky for the Spaniard, especially considering Muguruza’s less than stellar recent form.
Kirsten Flipkens (6) (3/1) vs Angelique Kerber (1) (1/4)
The 33-year-old Kirsten Flipkens has been a steady performer over the last few years, wringing out everything she can from her body as she heads towards the twilight of her career. She clearly has some affinity to this event having reached the final here in 2016. She is a rare serve and volley exponent who finds that very helpful on this surface. But she certainly doesn’t enter this event with too much immediate form to her name. She reached the final in Rosmalen last season and she states that the grass-courts are her favourite: that comes as no surprise considering her 2013 semi-final at Wimbledon. That makes this clash with current Wimbledon champ Angelique Kerber all the more interesting. Kerber, like Flipkens, enjoys using that backhand slice, making this an intriguing match-up of similar styles.
Yet another two-time Grand Slam winner, Angelique Kerber rounds off another quarterfinal that sees the seeded players proceed. She has had it fairly easy, with the rather ignominious pair of Kucova and Muchova in her rear-view this week. But that Indian Wells result was really something that could provide a springboard for Kerber. When seeds were falling likes flies everywhere, she managed to go all the way to the championship match. It was her first final since that remarkable win at Wimbledon last season. So it would appear that the evergreen German looks primed to strike again heading into this congested period of the season. As I noted earlier, Kerber is also a strong proponent of the backhand slice, and it will be intriguing to see how this one pans out. It may prove slightly more instinctive than your average baseline brawl.
There is no denying Kerber’s head-to-head superiority. She leads the stat 3-0, though one of those matches was remarkably played in 2006! As I said, Flipkens is a crafty pro whose style actually mimics Kerber’s to some extent. I just think that Kerber has the extra firepower if necessary. Perhaps a decent look would be a Kerber win in three sets. Kerber can sometimes require time to work out an opponent.
