The European Tour heads to Portugal for the GolfSixes on Friday 7 June 2019. Check out our full betting preview below.
Keith Pelly’s attempts to reinvigorate the tour are completely understandable given the hegemony of the US PGA behemoth. But I have to admit that this fortnight containing the Belgian Knockout and GolfSixes events has a slightly farcical dimension to it. Why not just have regular stroke-play events at Rinkvin and Oitavos Dunes?
There is a kitschy quality to these experiments that is hard to take seriously. I understand the need for some ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking, but I’m convinced that these inconsequential diversions are not the way forward. Be that as it may, the switch from England to Portugal this year could actually prove slightly ingenious, with the host nation set to host the Nations League Final on Sunday.

Oitavos Dunes, Cascais, Portugal
Friday 7 June - Saturday 8 June 2019
The format of this two-day event makes it something of a nightmare for traditional staking. The sides will play three round-robin matches of six holes each in their respective groups. They will utilize the quaint ‘Greensomes’ format. It is a variation of alternate shot that sees both players in the side tee off. The team will then use their discretion and select the tee shot they prefer and resume the hole. Winning a hole will see a side allocated a point. Each hole will have one point on offer to winners while halved holes will see no points awarded: if a side wins three holes and halves three the end score will be 3-0. This goal-difference system will help organize ties.
One aspect you have to admire about this format is its inclusivity: two all-women sides will take part this week. This course is ideal for a mixed-gender field. It is a small, wind-affected course that will be far more favourable to accuracy. The greens are grainy and tricky while the fairways will play firm. Oitavos has played host to four Open de Portugal events, with links specialists often excelling. The wind is predicted to be quite blustery this week so one would suspect that trend may indeed hold.
South African duo Brandon Stone and George Coetzee leap off the page as likely contenders with their links credentials. The Spanish duo of Nacho Elvira and Jorge Campillo have form coming into this event while defending champions Paul Dunne and Gavin Moyhinan will enjoy these conditions. But the niche format of this event makes the art of speculation a tempestuous bedfellow.

Value Bet
France (16/1)
This one looks decent value to me in this vexing format. Romain Wattel clearly thrives in this format, reaching last year’s final alongside Mike Lorenzo-Vera. It would seem to me that this French side should relish the switch to the European mainland. One concern will be the last minute switch in personnel with Wattel’s playing partner. Matthieu Pavon qualified for the US Open at Walton Heath, resulting in Victor Perez’s inclusion. The talented youngster has yet to fully find himself on tour but may revel in this relatively low-pressure atmosphere.
The Team to Beat
Spain (5/1)
While it’s hard to play favourites with a format as bizarre as this, this Spanish side could hardly be in better form. Jorge Campillo has missed his last two cuts at Bethpage and the Made in Denmark event. But prior to that he was probably the hottest property on the European Tour, with form figures that read 2-2-20-3-1-3. He won the Hassan Trophy and almost doubled up in China. Nacho Elvira has also enjoyed a banner year, with a 2nd place in the Qatar Masters and a 2nd at the Maybank Championship. He also has a 6th place in the Indian Open. He performed well in Belgium last week and should complement Campillo in an intimidating line-up.
