CHEROKEE MAIDEN wants to be in this distaffers only race. The daughter of Distorted Humor has two roughies outside her and can enjoy her own real estate while main foes Kizzy B and Shazzy B vie for racing room from outer posts. The selection has shipped from California having shown hints of ability in better company in five starts as a juvenile, starting a big double-figure prices on all but one occasion. Her best run was, however, her last, when fourth to Parkour at Del Mar.

Race 8 (Allowance Optional Claiming) No8: BLAMED

BLAMED sported on her last start at Gulfstream last month. The beautifully-bred filly, who is by Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame out of a Giant’s Causeway mare, has started no bigger than 6-5 and no shorter than 4-11 for her six career triumphs with the overriding conclusion being that she delivers when the money is down. Here she moves back to two turns for the first time since her Grade 3 triumph at Aqueduct last November, with the prospect of leading or lying handy. The danger is if the main pick gets caught wide in which case
VAULT and
VEXATIOUS would have a better chance of hammering home their advantage of posts 1 and 2. But the main threat looms from dual Group 1 winner (in Mexico City) Letrushka, who is an 8 from 8 winner on dirt, and impressed on her first run here a fortnight ago.

UNION RIDE. The Candy Ride gelding hasn’t raced since before Christmas and is having a first public appearance at Oaklawn since shipping from the West Coast, but if able to reproduce the level of form shown at Santa Anita and Del Mar (where he completed a fine hat-trick last fall) he should give a good account, as six furlongs is undoubtedly his optimum distance.

Race 2: No3 SUNSHINE CITY

With nothing to go on, ploughing into a Ward favourite can be a dicey affair, and the stable saw a very well regarded filly Lilac turned over when long odds-on for her debut earlier in the month. That said,
SUNSHINE CITY has impressed in her workouts and should take plenty of stopping on debut. She’s bred to be quick and has a good draw. Missing Link is drawn one slot inside her and figures to get into the money while Darla appeals most of the remainder.

Race 6 (Maiden Special Weight) No3: COIN THE PHRASE

One of the most experienced runners in the field,
COIN THE PHRASE, has put in two satisfactory efforts over course and distance since her arrival from New York. She’s progressed from race to race and didn’t go unbacked when chasing home Notorious R B G early last month. She shaped like a filly ready to win, with Saez aboard for the first time. As the only older filly in the contest
FUDDLED has to concede weight for age. She’s clearly been a slow developer but on debut here a month back, hunted up First Wave to give connections hope she will improve worth waiting for. Gloriously finished one place back in the same race, doing nothing wrong and giving her a squeak.

Race 8 (Maiden Claiming) No7: CHILL HAZE
Trainer: Saffie Joseph - Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione
There’s every reason to think
CHILL HAZE can carry on the progression that’s seen him improve from race to race this year. Starting as a 6-4 chance he found one to beat him over course and distance on first start off the claim for his in-form handler earlier in the month. The colt shouldn’t need to improve much more than that in order to open his account. Bourbon Street rates the main threat after two near misses for his new trainer earlier in the month. He again has Saez doing the steering and surely has to go well. Fast Magic represents a top barn and figures to earn, if ready.

Race 9 (Allowance Optional Claiming) No8: YOLANDA’S PRIDE
Trainer: Steve Klesaris - Jockey: Irad Ortiz Jr
Ortiz is striking at 40% and his first look at
YOLANDA’S PRIDE can reap dividends. The selection has experienced an industrious start to the year with five outings over this course and distance that include an optional claiming win last month. When stepping into this class she didn’t do much wrong to chase home Lady Panda and has every chance of taking home another cheque. Whether it’s the winner’s prize depends on the running of Ghostly Beauty who Ortiz knows well. But at respective prices Yolanda’s Pride looks the better value proposition.
