Our football writer previews gameweek 9 of the German Bundesliga.
Last weekend I lost every single bet, except Leipzig to win at home. Football’s a funny old game and in Germany, the adage is put to good use. The matches began with two 3-0 away wins, Dortmund and Wolfsburg were both thwarted by sides in poor form and slow starters Schalke finally delivered on pre-season hype. Of course, this article will look to make amends for last week’s shambolic affair.
Friday 28 October
Monchengladbach 17/20 | Draw 26/10 | Ein. Frankfurt 31/10
Monchengladbach’s run of form against Bayern Munich was brought to an end, last weekend’s loss their first in the last five meetings with the Bavarian giants. Worse still, it leaves in the Foals in the bottom half of the table after eight matches. Gladbach lacked energy or invention but should be up for it at home to Frankfurt.
The away side did bag three goals on the road to beat Hamburg however and will arrive at Borussia-Park in a confident mood. Lewis Holtby, Shani Tarashaj and Haris Seferovic all netted in the 3-0 win which saw Frankfurt end a run of four matches without three points. Over 2.5 Goals at 13/20 seems the best bet considering form and recent head-to-heads.
Saturday 29 October
11/10 Mainz | Draw 23/10 | Ingolstadt 51/20
Mainz were denied a possible place in the top six as they crashed to a 3-0 loss away at Schalke. Mainz have proved inconsistent of late, a recent record of two wins, two losses and one draw symptomatic of their form at large. Ingolstadt were denied their first win of the season by a resilient Dortmund side that refused to be beaten.
Ingolstadt made an ideal start with two goals in the first half hour, immediately restoring the advantage after Dortmund scored on the hour mark. It was not to be however, as the hosts were overpowered in the final 20 minutes.
This could go either way and Both Teams To Score makes the most appeal at 8/10.
18/10 Wolfsburg | Draw 49/20 | Leverkusen 37/20
Wolfsburg’s awful start to the season continued under caretaker coach Valerien Ismael as they crashed to a 3-1 loss to Darmstadt. Wolves have collected only six points from their opening eight matches and slid down the table to 16th. Jeffrey Bruma’s red card midway through the first half did nothing to help matters and Mario Gomez’s first goal for the club was bittersweet to say the least.
Leverkusen’s Kevin Volland was sent off after only five minutes as the club lost 3-0 at home to Hoffenheim. Both of these clubs have been poor for much of the month and it’s another horrible game to predict.
It’s historically a match full of goals and Over 2.5 is the tip at 7/10.
12/1 Augsburg | Draw 5/1 | Bayern Munich 2/9
A goalless first half gave way to some creativity in the second, however, Augsburg came out worse off in their clash on the road at Freiburg. Conceding twice, Halil Altintop reduced the arrears and Augsburg might have snatched an equaliser late on only to waste a good chance.
Augsburg will be aware that a loss against the Bundesliga champions can see them uncomfortably close to the relegation zone. Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the table to three points as they eased past Monchengladbach 2-0 last weekend. It should be business as usual here.
Back Bayern Munich at 2/9.
14/10 Werder Bremen | Draw 49/20 | Freiburg 37/20
Werder Bremen fell to their first defeat under newly-appointed manager Alexander Nouri as they were beaten 3-1 in Leipzig last weekend. The goal was scored by Serge Gnabry, signed from Arsenal in the summer and finding life peachy at Bremen. He’s scored three times in seven matches and seems a key component to the club’s season.
Freiburg beat Augsburg 2-1 at home to continue their fantastic from at Schwarzwald-Stadion. Freiburg have won all four of their home matches this season, but conversely have lost all of their matches on the road.
I’m backing the trend to continue with Werder Bremen the pick at 14/10.
9/2 Darmstadt | Draw 49/20 | Leipzig 6/10
Darmstadt picked up only their second win of the season with a 3-1 victory over 10-man Wolfsburg last weekend. It broke a run of five straight matches without victory and Darmstadt will already be preparing for a relegation battle with last season’s form proving elusive.
Leipzig are currently making Darmstadt and Ingolstadt’s newly promoted heroics of last season seem less than impressive. They have begun the season unbeaten and last week’s 3-1 win over Werder Bremen came from a Naby Keita double with Davie Selke capping up the scoring late in the game.
I’m backing the good times to roll with Leipzig to win at 6/10.
5/10 Dortmund | Draw 7/2 | Schalke 47/10
Christian Pulisic proved Dortmund’s saviour as his introduction enabled Thomas Tuchel’s charges to sneak a point from their visit to Ingolstadt. Dortmund were 3-1 down before Pulisic’s goal and assist snatched the draw. Still, Dortmund are six points shy of Bayern Munich in sixth place and considering the strength of the Bavarians, Dortmund’s race could already be run.
Schalke’s recent resurgence continued with a 3-0 win over Mainz at the weekend. The three points took the club out of the relegation zone for the first time this season and they’ll be thankful of the form coming into this Revierderby.
Both Teams To Score at 6/10 is the tip given history and form.
Sunday 30 October
5/4 Hoffenheim | Draw 24/10 | Hertha Berlin 21/10
Hoffenheim made good use of an early red card and hammered Leverkusen 3-0 away from home. The victory ensured that Hoffenheim continued a remarkable unbeaten start to the season with four wins and four draws. Lying fourth, they’ll be quietly confident in hosting a Hertha Berlin side only a point and a place above them.
The men from the capital were the first side to beat Cologne this season, the 2-1 victory ensuring that pressure is still applied to leaders Bayern Munich. Vedad Ibisevic put the hosts in front before Niklas Stark grabbed the decider after the away side levelled.
This will be a tight encounter and the draw as a stand alone bet is tipped at 24/10.
6/10 Cologne | Draw 28/10 | Hamburg 47/10
Cologne suffered their first defeat of the season with a 2-1 loss to Hertha Berlin last weekend. The league’s top scorer Anthony Modeste grabbed a goal back on the visit but ultimately Cologne didn’t have enough in the capital. A great start to the season sees the club in fifth position and they’ll look to bounce back straight away with the visit of Hamburg.
The visitors are bottom of the table without a win all season. Two draws has seen them creep to two points but they have rarely threatened to leave with three points.
Cologne simply must be backed at 6/10.
TREBLE @ 38/10
Bayern Munich Win 2/9
Werder Bremen Win 14/10
Cologne Win 6/10
