Our stand-in Serie A writer takes a look at week 19 of the Italian top flight which gets underway on Friday 29 December.
We look forward to week 19 of the 2017/18 Italian Serie A season with Napoli’s lead atop the standings is sitting at just one point with the Old Lady of Turin breathing down their necks.
At the other end of the table, Benevento are still rock bottom without a win with Verona and Crotone rounding off the relegation places. There’s plenty to look forward to this week, so let’s get to it:
Friday 29 December
Crotone 11/1 | Draw 47/10 | Napoli 1/4
We open things up this week as lowly Crotone have the unenviable task of hosting Napoli on Friday evening. Walter Zenga’s men were unceremoniously thumped last time out by Lazio, and you really do fail to see them having any joy against one of the best attacking units in Europe.
The men from Naples have bounced back well following their 1-0 defeat against Juventus a few weeks ago. Since then they’ve accumulated seven out of a possible nine points against Fiorentina, Torino and Sampdoria. They’re back in the groove and will be looking to extend their lead over Juve out to four points – even if only for 24 hours.
Back Napoli on the (-1) handicap here at 13/20.
Saturday 30 December
Fiorentina 23/20 | Draw 24/10 | AC Milan 47/20
We’re off to Florence next for arguably the game of the weekend as AC Milan face Fiorentina. La Viola are undefeated in five including two very credible draws against Napoli and Lazio. They’ll fancy their chances this weekend against an AC Milan side which promised so much at the start of the season, but have ultimately failed to deliver.
Milan have had a torrid time of it lately, losing both of their last two matches without finding the back of the net. Worryingly, one of those defeats came against second-bottom Verona who outclassed their more illustrious opposition on their way to a 3-0 win.
Fiorentina are rightly favourites here and should be backed as such.
Torino 9/10 | Draw 5/2 | Genoa 31/10
Turin’s second club will be looking to convert more of their draws into wins. They’ve drawn half of their 18 matches as they plod along in mid-table. They will, however, be confident of grabbing their first win in three against a Genoa side who tend to blow hot and cold.
Genoa have really battled for consistency in the build-up to the festive season. They did manage a narrow 1-0 win over Benevento. That victory wouldn’t have done much for their confidence with Davide Ballardini no doubt targeting a big win over such meagre opposition. Not too sure Genoa have what it takes here.
Torino look a top bet at 9/10.
Benevento 22/10 | Draw 23/10 | Chievo 5/4
Short and sweet here – Chievo should really be winning this game and I expect them to do just that against a Benevento side who look well on their way to relegation.
Roma 3/10 | Draw 9/2 | Sassuolo 15/2
Roma head into their tie with Sassuolo following a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at the Juventus Stadium. Still, a loss at the home of the Old Lady is hardly the worst result in the world. Eusebio Di Francesco will now demand nothing less than a win when they welcome a Sassuolo side who’ve battled domestically this season.
Sassuolo – despite having a pretty poor season domestically – are in really good form at the minute. They’ve won three on the spin against Crotone, Sampdoria and Inter Milan and will have their sights set on yet another big scalp. Interesting one to call this, but I think both teams will find the back of the net.
Get on the Both Teams to Score market at 15/20.
Sampdoria 7/10 | Draw 28/10 | SPAL 36/10
Following an excellent start to the season, Sampdoria have just gone off the boil a bit. They’ve only managed to claim a single point in their last five matches. Mind you, three of those four defeats have been by the odd goal which seems to suggest that they’re not a long way off of getting back into their stride.
SPAL have moved out of the relegation zone by picking up five points from a possible nine. They’ll be dead keen on springing another surprise this weekend, and who’s to say they can’t? With the form that the Blucerchiati are in, you wouldn’t bet against it!
Bit of a left-field call, but take SPAL on the double-chance here at 21/20.
Atalanta 9/20 | Draw 34/10 | Cagliari 57/10
Yet another quickie here – Atalanta are in great form having not tasted defeat in five attempts. Cagliari on the other hand have taken just two points from a possible 15. Home win all the way here – 9/20 is a great price!
Bologna 13/10 | Draw 43/20 | Udinese 22/10
Right then, we’re in for what should be a pretty one-sided affair. Bologna have been inconsistent of late, winning twice, drawing once and losing twice in their last five. They played out to a cracking 3-2 win against Chievo last time out but will need to be better this week when Udinese come calling.
Massimo Oddo’s men have been on fire lately and don’t look like losing a game. They’ve won their last four matches, scoring 12 goals and conceding just once. Why then they’re 22/10 against a Bologna side who have battled to churn out positive results is beyond me.
The away win at 22/10 is arguably the bet of the week for me – get on!
Inter Milan 11/10 | Draw 51/20 | Lazio 23/10
This looks as though it could be the game of the weekend! Inter will definitely have a bit of a point to prove following two defeats on the spin against Udinese and Sassuolo. They’ll be back in front of their home fans this weekend at the San Siro where an ever more impatient faithful will demand nothing less than a win.
Lazio are another side who have just started to struggle a bit of late. They still find themselves in fifth place but two wins from five has seen them lost ground on the top three. Simone Inzaghi will need his charges to put in a proper shift this weekend if they’re to keep their title hopes alive. Both sides appear to be pretty evenly matched here.
I reckon we could be in for a rather dull draw, get on at 51/20.
Verona 12/1 | Draw 47/10 | Juventus 2/9
Another one we needn’t blast on about much. Hellas Verona are second-bottom for a reason and don’t have a hope in hell of beating a Juve side who haven’t lost in eight. Get on the away win here at 2/9 – add to all weekend multiples.
