After a couple of surprising midweek results in the Carabao Cup, attention shifts back to the Premier League this weekend.
Virgil van Dijk a doubt for Chelsea clash
The big news coming out of the Liverpool camp before their visit to Chelsea is that Virgil van Dijk may not feature at the Bridge. The Dutch centre-half has not trained since going off early in the second half against Southampton last weekend with a rib injury. The news will come as a welcome surprise for Mauricio Sarri whose misfiring strikers – Alvaro Morata and Olivier Giroud – will probably fancy their chances better without the prospect of having to face the best centre-half in the world. Chelsea also have the added advantage of having beat Liverpool earlier in the week in the Carabao Cup courtesy of an Eden Hazard screamer. Oh, this fixture will also pit the world’s two most expensive goalkeepers against one another – plenty to look forward to here!
Pellegrini will smell blood when United come calling
West Ham – having beaten Everton 3-1 a week before ending Chelsea’s 100% league record in a 0-0 draw – will be quietly confident when Manchester United make the trip to the London Stadium. United have been plagued by off-field issues which one would imagine are affecting performances on the pitch. The on-going feud between Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba has allegedly descended to the point where players at the club have started taking sides. The likes of Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw in Pogba’s corner while senior pros like Ashley Young and Nemanja Matic have sided with Mourinho. Memories of their 4-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool on the opening weekend of the League will be a distant memory now for an ever-improving West Ham side who will would love to put a poor start to the 2018/19 campaign behind them with a big scalp.
Wolves to pile more misery on Southampton in the Midlands
What a reintroduction to the Premier League Wolves have enjoyed! The men from the Black Country sit 10th in the league after six matches but more impressively have played some magnificent football along the way. Under the tutelage of Nuno Epirito Santo, the Midlands club have played brilliant attacking football this season and looked like the better team for large periods at Old Trafford last week in their 1-1 draw with Manchester United. Southampton meanwhile appear to be sleepwalking through this season. They’ve claimed one win in six matches with Mark Hughes appearing content just to see the Saints survive the drop. If Wolves are anywhere near their best they’ll thump the South Coast outfit.
Emery faces stern home test against Hornets
Watford make the trip to the Emirates this weekend and will desperate to get one over an Arsenal side who appear to have turned a corner in recent weeks under Unai Emery. Watford skipper Troy Deeney famously accused Arsenal of lacking cajones in their 2-1 defeat at Vicarage Road last season. He added more fuel to the fire by insinuating that Danny Welbeck should be left out of the England squad in favour of himself, Danny Ings, Glenn Murray or Callum Wilson who have all performed consistently well for their clubs. Amid all of the tasty sub-plots here there’s a game of football to be played. Deeney will allegedly take pain-killing injections following a tackle from Timothy Fosu-Mensah last week. Arsenal, meanwhile, have won their last six matches in all competitions, although those wins did come against rather lacklustre opposition. Watford will be their biggest test since their 3-2 defeat at Chelsea.
David Wagner desperate to take points off of Spurs
There were three results that really summed up Huddersfield Town’s season in 2017/18. A 2-1 home win against Manchester United in October and back to back draws away from home against Manchester City and Chelsea toward the end of the campaign. The Terriers haven’t won a single match this season and are rock-bottom of the standings having scored just three goals. Hardly the ideal time to face a Tottenham side who are just beginning to find their feet again after a bit of an early season wobble. Spurs still look a little weary though and almost threw away a two-goal lead at Brighton before following that up with another wobbly performance against Watford in the League Cup which they’d go on to win on penalties. It would be absolutely criminal for Spurs not to get three points here.
