With Koepka’s Major dominance quite rightly hogging the golfing spotlight, this week’s trip to Denmark presents a nice opportunity to enjoy some slightly more restrained viewing following Bethpage’s frankly boorish atmosphere.
This will be the sixth renewal of this event and the fifth instalment held at Himmerland. Last year’s edition relocated to Silkeborg in commemoration of Thomas Bjorn’s Ryder Cup captaincy. This event marks a real shift in emphasis for the European Tour, with 18 of the next 20 events taking place on European soil. Matt Wallace will be looking to defend his title following a sturdy showing in New York State.
European Tour 2019 | Made in Denmark
Himmerland Spa Resort, Denmark
Thursday 23 May - Sunday 26 May 2019
This course resides around 16 miles south-west of Denmark’s fourth largest town: Aalborg. This parkland style track is actually a rather tricky little beast. It has undulating fairways and greens and features water on only four holes. It is an exposed track that will be susceptible to windy conditions. That’s probably the reason why British players have tended to thrive around here. The courses in Scandinavia tend to correlate well with Britain. Just look at last year’s event in Silkeborg: Matt Wallace won in a playoff against three fellow Englishmen. There is punishing rough and players will need to scramble well around these pernickety greens.
Matt Wallace will feel extremely confident following his intimate bonding session with the patrons of Bethpage Black. One wonders how well he will be able to mentally dial in after such a taxing week in America. There will be strong home representation with the likes of Thornbjorn Olesen and Lucas Bjerregaard. Former champion Thomas Pieters brings a semblance of class to proceedings while the likes of Jordan Smith and Erik Van Rooyen will be keen to contend.

Value Bets
David Horsey
To Win (70/1), To Place (15/1)
I’m really sticking to the maxim that British players are the ones to watch around this course. David Horsey hasn’t won since his triumph here in 2015 and is hardly the most fashionable choice out there. But he actually enters this event in a really respectable vein of form. He has made five consecutive cuts this season, including a tie for 12th in Oman. That represents decent enough form when you correlate that with his course history. Not only did he taste victory in 2015, but he also followed that up with a runner-up finish in 2017.
Oliver Wilson
To Win (110/1), To Place (24/1)
Considering my whole rap on this event resembling links conditions, Oliver Wilson looks like fabulous value at 110/1: remember that this was the man who shot the first ever European Tour 59 in Portugal last year. The former Dunhill Links Champion is coming off a decent eight-place at the British Masters. The 2008 Ryder Cup member is a brilliant scrambler and should thrive around this course. He was 26th on debut here in 2016, though back then he was really way behind where he is now with his game. Now he sits 51st in the Race to Dubai standings despite not being a full tour member. He has four top 10’s this year despite only having conditional status. Wilson is just the sort of mercurial player that it pays to back in these kinds of events.
The Man to Beat
Thomas Detry
To Win (33/1), To Place (7/1)
Now here’s a man who is very much a fashionable pick. The Belgian is following in the footsteps of compatriot Thomas Pieters in the big-hitting Belgian stereotype. It’s only a matter of time before the hyper-talented Detry makes a breakthrough. He has finished inside of the top 15 in three of his last six events. He also has some course credentials, finishing 14th on his only visit to Himmerland. That weekend saw him clock three sub 70 rounds, which leads me to believe that this week may just be the occasion for a major Detry breakthrough.
