Niel Morrice brings us all of his best bets and tips for Saturday's racing at Lingfield, Doncaster as well as the Epsom undercard and an in-depth preview of the Investec Derby.
Investec Derby Preview
Ask most judges to pinpoint the Derby winner and the general retort might well be 'too open to call' - a judgement based largely on the deepness of the Coolmore challenge, with Aidan O'Brien set to saddle his customary handful of talented protagonists, including the first two in the betting
SIR DRAGONET and
BROOME.
These colts took contrasting routes to Epsom, Sir Dragonet coping well with easy conditions to romp home in the Chester Vase and Broome staying in Ireland to power home in the Leopardstown trial. Sir Dragonet is unbeaten, yet Broome with four defeats next to his three wins doesn't hit you between the eyes as a potential winner of our Premier Classic unless you study how strongly he galloped out in the Derrinstown. I liked the way from going not all that well he really zipped into gear in the final quarter mile.
Looking just a rung or two down the list,
ANTHONY VAN DYCK and
JAPAN also come into the reckoning for Coolmore. The former showed his undoubted talent to place in most of the top juvenile races in England and Ireland last year, and when going further than a mile for the first time in the Lingfield Derby Trial he came home unchallenged, showing that the Epsom-like undulations held no perils for him.
Japan was considered by the shrewdest paddock judges to be in need of the run when coming home fourth behind
TELECASTER in the Dante Stakes. In recent years only Workforce has managed to lose at York before winning at Epsom. Japan certainly needs to improve in leaps and bounds if he's to top his own team on Saturday as well as master the 'away' challenge.
CIRCUS MAXIMUS adds lustre to the O'Brien team, carrying the colours of the Niarchos family after his workmanlike win in the Dee Stakes at Chester. He now gets the assist of first time cheekpieces with Frankie Dettori in the irons.
Another Irish-trained contender is
MADHMOON who is out to prove the theory that the 2,000 Guineas is the best trial for the Derby. It transpired that he had an impossible draw from stall one in that Classic, yet he managed to trouble the judge in fourth and ran a similar kind of race as Masar last year. Veteran trainer Kevin Prendergast will be cock-a-hoop if his colt can now emulate Masar.
As with Sir Dragonet,
TELECASTER had to be supplemented into the race after his bold display of aggression in the Dante. He wasn't shy of chasing a strong early pace, found himself in front early in the straight yet saw his race out willingly to repel Too Darn Hot who didn't let the firm down when second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas.
BANGKOK hails from a stable that can do no wrong. Andrew Balding could win with the yard cat and don't be surprised if this stocky colt doesn't light up the board in some fashion.
Neil Morrice's Predicted Finish:
1st BROOME
2nd Sir Dragonet
3rd Madhmoon
4th Bangkok
5th Anthony Van Dyck
Epsom Undercard Best Bets
Race 2: VERACIOUS (1)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
Jockey: Ryan Moore
Top rated
VERACIOUS treads a path Stoute is more than used to with his 4yo fillies and has plenty going for her in what is a class drop. Having been a bit keen for her own good on her comeback in a Newmarket Group 2 she’ll be straighter and can outclass her foes en route to Royal Ascot.
Race 2: ZAAKI (5)
Trainer: Sir Michael Stoute
Jockey: Ryan Moore
The Stoute/Moore combination can strike again with
ZAAKI who having begun his career in humble origins has taken a new lease on life since moving to Freemason Lodge. He showed gritty determination to get the job done on his return to the fray in Listed company at Ascot and should find this move into a Group 3 well within his compass.
Lingfield Best Bet
Race 6: VOLTAIC (6)
Trainer: Paul Cole
Jockey: Harry Bentley
Having demonstrated that he has a fair share of ability, VOLTAIC looks to have been found a perfect opportunity to open his account. He ran a cracker in a better maiden than this first time back at Salisbury before failing to handle the track at Brighton. If he runs to his mark he will be very hard to beat.
Doncaster Best Bets
Race 5: CAPTON (4) (Each Way)
Trainer: Mick Easterby
Jockey: Josh Quinn
Having shown little since his move to North Yorkshire from Oxfordshire,
CAPTON has taken a dive down the ratings and is dangerously well handicapped. He’s carded as the rank outsider in this but will experience more favourable underfoot conditions than those at Chester and can put that behind him with a frame finish.
Race 7: ARTISTIC RIFLES (2)
Trainer: Charlie Hills
Jockey: David Probert
Hills has his Lambourn team in good order and
ARTISTIC RIFLES looks to have the potential to go to Royal Ascot for a shot at the Britannia. In order to do that he must confirm his liking for this course by following up his engaging win a fortnight ago over this longer trip. He’s in great form and I think he will.
