Originally known as the Insurance City Open way back in 1952, this event has undergone various incarnations over the years. It has been the official post-US Open spot since 2007, with the exception of 2016 to accommodate the Olympic Games. Players will switch from the generally treacherous Pebble Beach to a far more amenable test of golf.
Pebble Beach proved every bit as dramatic as its fabled seaside vistas. Gary Woodland held off the charge of Major extraordinaire Brooks Koepka in imperious fashion. Generally speaking, the week immediately following a Major, results in a vastly truncated field. But this year’s Travellers Championship has attracted a stellar field featuring World Number One Brooks Koepka.
The US PGA Tour 2019 | The Travellers Championship
TPC River Highlands, Cromwell, Connecticut
Thursday 20 June - Sunday 23 June 2019
This event traditionally gives the players an opportunity to take a step back from the USGA’s infamously gruelling layouts. It is a relatively short par 70 with generous fairways and smaller than average poa annua greens. The course was designed by Robert J Roll and Maurice Kearney back in 1928. It was originally known as Middleton Golf Club. But the course underwent a major renovation under the scalpel of famed designer Pete Dye in 1982. Holes 15 thru 17 are affectionately known as the ‘Golden Triangle’, with the drivable par 4 15th known for creating dramatic momentum swings. Statistics seem to suggest that ball-striking will be of minimal importance this week, with easily accessible greens and fairways. You can expect a putt-off that will offer solace to the older guys at under 7,000 yards.
Brooks Koepka obviously leads the markets, though, I would hesitate backing the bold American post Major. He seems to unconsciously check out to some degree in non-Major events. Patrick Cantlay underwhelmed last week while Jordan Spieth struggled for consistency. Francisco Molinari will look to bounce back while Jason Day and Justin Thomas never really threatened at Pebble. Louis Oosthuizen tees it up this week in the wake of yet another disappointing Major Sunday. Viktor Hovland will be making his professional debut a week after his terrific showing as the top amateur in the US Open.

Chez Reavie
To Win (70/1), To Place (15/1)
Chez Reavie began the season in fairly blistering form, with three top 10’s in the opening salvos of the campaign. But his season went into a funk after that. But last week he finished in a tie for 3rd at Pebble for his best ever Major finish. Outside of a cut at the Fort Worth Invitational, this was his 4th top 20 finish in five starts. Reavie has rediscovered his mojo and he possesses decent form around TPC River Highlands. He has made five out of six cuts around here including a tie for 11th in 2011. Perhaps contention last week will give him some added confidence as the FedEx Cup hurtles towards its conclusion.
Kevin Kisner
To Win (75/1), To Place (16/1)
I have consciously opted to favour accurate shot-makers over traditional course bullies this week. Kevin Kisner fits perfectly into that mould. He has been extremely consistent this season without contending as much as he would like. His victory at the WGC Match-play was something of an outlier. It was a positive outlier though, as Austin Country Club is also a Pete Dye track. Kisner often plays his best golf on Pete Dye courses, though he will need to improve his poa annua putting this week. Having said that, 75/1 looks extremely appealing for a player of his quality.
The Man to Beat
Russell Knox
To Win (60/1), To Place (13/1)
Russell Knox has been on the cusp of real contention throughout the season, with a series of top 20 finishes. These include a 10th in Phoenix and a 8th at the recent Charles Schwab Invitational. Knox is a shot-maker who tends to thrive on these examinations. He won here in 2016, showcasing that length is clearly not pivotal around TPC River Highlands. He currently sits 3rd on tour in proximity to hole, which could prove quite vital in what is expected to be a putting showdown.
