Darry Worthington takes a look at Round 2 of the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership, which gets underway on Friday the 27th of November.
The Gallagher Premiership got underway last weekend and we were treated to some fantastic rugby action and a couple of upsets to boot, with the biggest seeing newly-promoted Newcastle beat Bath. There was also some normality, however, as reigning champions, Exter opened their campaign with a solid 3-33 win over Harlequins.
Round 2 looks like an absolute cracker with the pick of the action seeing Gloucester take on Wasps.
Newcastle Falcons v Sale Sharks
Friday 27 November
Kingston Park Stadium
21:45
To Win (80 Mins)
Falcons 3/1
Draw 22/1
Sharks 1/4
The Newcastle Falcons announced their return to the Premiership with a fantastic 12-9 victory over Bath at the Rec. The Falcons also enjoyed a great season in the Championship last year winning all 15 of their games before the season was called off due to COVID.
The Sale Sharks also got their season off to a solid start as they beat the Northampton Saints 32-23. This was just the tonic for the Sharks who had a rather disappointing conclusion to last season as they missed out on a semi-final berth by three points.
Verdict: Falcons 3/1
I have a sneaky suspicion the Falcons are going to enjoy a really good run during the opening few weeks of the league. Most promoted sides come up and win a number of their games before the inevitable mid-season slump. My money is on the hosts continuing their good form here.
Northampton Saints v Harlequins
Saturday 28 November
Franklin's Gardens
16:00
To Win (80 Mins)
Northampton 21/20
Draw 18/1
Harlequins 8/10
Northampton and Harlequins will be looking to atone for extremely poor showings in the opening round when they go head to head in Saturday's opener. The hosts went down 32-23 to the Sharks while 'Quins lost 3-33 to Exeter.
Both sides had rather average 2019/20 campaigns with Northampton finishing the season in eighth place with eight wins from their 22 games. 'Quins fared slightly better finishing in sixth with 10 wins from their 22 games.
Verdict: Northampton 21/20
While 'Quins did win the last meeting between the sides 30-17, Northampton have been the dominant force in recent years winning four of the last five contests. These games also tend to go the way of the side hosting with only one of the last five fixtures being won by the away side. The signs are certainly putting to a home win this Saturday.
Gloucester v Wasps
Saturday 28 November
Kingsholm Stadium
17:00
To Win (80 Mins)
Gloucester 12/10
Draw 18/1
Wasps 7/10
The pick of this weekend's action will see Gloucester take on Wasps. The visitors got their campaign off to a decent enough start as they ground out at a 23-20 win over the Bristol Bears, who were missing a plethora of their big-name players. Gloucester had a far tougher time of it in the opening round as they went down 38-15 to the Leicester Tigers.
Wasps were the better team when the two sides met last with Coventry side running out 39-22 victors. Gloucester had won the previous four games between the sides, however.
Verdict: Wasps 7/10
Wasps looked the far better team last week and I reckon they'll get the job done again this weekend.
Bristol Bears v Worcester Warriors
Saturday 28 November
Ashton Gate
17:00
To Win (80 Mins)
Bristol
Draw
Worcester
*Odds to be added on release
Next, up is the Bristol Bears taking on the Worcester Warriors. Like last weekend, the hosts will come into this one missing a host of stars with Semi Radradra away on international duty - or COVID quarantine as that's what the Fijian squad meet up has descended into - while Steven Luatua is still out with a serious leg injury.
Both these teams gave decent accounts of themselves last weekend with Worcester sneaking past London Irish 11-10 and Bristol going down by just three points to a very strong Wasps outfit.
Verdict: Bristol
While I think the Bears will sneak a win here, I can't see it being by more than five points. Hence, any plus handicap over seven points should be taken with confidence.
Exeter Chiefs v Bath
Saturday 28 November
Sandy Park
19:30
To Win (80 Mins)
Exeter 1/16
Draw 33/1
Bath 15/2
Reigning champions Exter will be looking for another big win when they take on a Bath side who were extremely underwhelming last weekend.
The hosts fired a massive warning shot last weekend as they registered an eye-cacthing 3-33 bonus-point win over Harlequins. Bath, who were defeated semi-finalists last season, got the 2020/21 campaign off to an extremely poor start as they went down 12-19 to newly-promoted Newcastle.
Verdict: Exeter 1/16
Bath really did not impress me last week and I fear they are in for a tough time of it against a slightly weakened but still strong, Exeter side.
London Irish v Leicester Tigers
Sunday 29 November
Brentford Community Stadium
18:15
To Win (80 Mins)
Irish 17/20
Draw 18/1
Leicester 1/1
We close out the round out in Brentford where London Irish will take on Leicester. The two sides experienced contrasting fortunes in the opening round with Irish going down 11-10 to Worcester Warriors, while Leicester hammered Gloucester 38-15.
Leicester have a decent enough recent record over Irish winning four of the last meeting between the sides. They also won the last encounter which was a bit of a dog fight, 13-7.
Verdict: Leicester 1/1
I'm expecting another big showing from a Tigers side that looks far more settled than the one that was on show last season.
