Damien Kayat previews the Golf in Dubai Championship preview taking place at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in the UAE.

This little piece of reshuffling is perhaps one of the more ingenious that Keith Pelley and co have devised. With this event played concurrently with the SA Open, the European Tour has allowed for two separate paths towards Race to Dubai qualification. They have also allowed those already qualified for next week’s season-ending event the chance to hone their Dubai skills a week early. This event is being staged from Wednesday to Saturday (ensuring separate final days for both events). Players will also get the chance to acclimatize to Jumeirah Golf Estates. However, this week they will not be participating on the Championship Course: The Earth Course. This week sees the players compete on the Fire Course. All they need is a Wind Course and they will have an entire R&B theme going.
Much like next week’s Earth Course, the Fire Course was designed by Aussie legend Greg Norman. Opened in 2010, the Fire Course is generally regarded as a far easier test than the Earth Course. Its fairways are far more generous and the greens lack the speed of the Championship Course. This traditional par 72 layout has more of links feel (though there are still some considerable elevation changes). All in all, this should prove a pushover for the pros and will boil down to a birdie fest. It should also serve as ideal preparation for those fortunate enough to qualify for next week’s event.
Left-handed Scot Robert McIntyre is fast becoming the most exciting left-handed prospect in world golf since Bubba Watson. He has been the modicum of consistency of late and makes a fairly understandable form favourite. Bernd Wiesberger shouldn’t be sneezed at following an eye-catching 4th at the recent RSM Classic. Adri Aranus will feel disappointed that he let things slip last week. Martin Kaymer has been playing well of late while gigantic Finn Sami Valimaki is fast becoming a perennial title contender. Andy Sullivan tends to thrive on these easy layouts and shouldn’t be underestimated. Elsewhere, the likes of Aaron Rai and Matt Wallace will be looking for a solid preparation week.

Value Bets
Adri Arnaus: To Win 25/1 | To Place 11/2
Adri Arnaus- much likes Thomas Detry- continues to frustrate in search of his maiden European Tour victory. But the clear progression in his game seems to suggest that victory must be around the corner. His 5th place at Leopard Creek followed another 5th place in Italy. His explosive style should make him an ideal candidate for these wide, exposed fairways. The 26-year-old is also a Dubai resident, and has been savouring the prospect of playing back-to-back events at home. He finished 3rd in the Desert Classic at the beginning of the year, highlighting his ability to perform in the gulf state.
Sebastian Heisele: To Win 110/1 | To Place 24/1
This is the ultimate ‘flying under the radar pick’. Just one look at his statistics makes his 110/1 price look a little steep. He currently ranks 13th in SG: Off the Tee and 32nd for GIR. He also currently sits 54th for SG: Putting. He currently boasts a run of ten consecutive rounds under par on the European Tour. A recent 4th place in Italy reflects his ability to mix it up at the top of the leaderboard. His ball-striking abilities make him a nice dark-horse pick in the place markets.
The Man to Beat: Andy Sullivan: To Win 25/1 | To Place 11/2
As I noted earlier, Andy Sullivan just has a penchant for these comfortable layouts. He demonstrated this perfectly when he won the English Championship in August (he won in a score of 27 under). His last two starts have been somewhat disappointing. He finished well down the pecking order in Cyprus before missing the cut at the RSM Classic. But let’s not forget how well he played at Wentworth recently (he ultimately finished 5th). Sullivan is now a four-time European Tour winner and perhaps does not receive the respect he sometimes deserves.
