With the international break taking centre-stage this week, we've found a tasty English Football League quad for you.
With the international break taking precedence this weekend, we’re left scratching around for some league action to bet on.
Fortunately for us, however, England’s League One and League Two are unaffected by unwanted international windows. While the lower leagues are generally a betting minefield, there’s always plenty of value about. Let’s check out this weekend’s multiple:
Saturday 3 September
Bolton 7/10 | Draw 51/20 | Southend 38/10
Bolton have started life in League One brilliantly after their ignominious relegation from the Championship last season. Under new ownership and management, the playing staff have started to find their feet again; winning four and drawing one of their opening five games. That one draw came last weekend against fellow relegation casualties from last season, Charlton. There are players with Premier League experience dotted throughout this side including the likes of Mark Davis, Jay Spearing and David Wheater – they look a top prospect for promotion.
They’ll go up against a Southend side who have struggled to find their feet this season. Three losses, a draw and a solitary win have left them near the bottom of the table with a lot of ground to make up if they’re to get into the play-off places. The Shrimpers were comfortably beaten at home last week by Fleetwood Town for the first time in their history after a strike each from Chris Long and Ashley Hunter. They look as though they’ll struggle this season.
Back Bolton to win comfortably at 7/10.
Luton Town 9/10 | Draw 49/20 | Wycombe 3/1
Luton Town have made a bright start to their League Two campaign claiming 10 points in their first five games. They won handsomely last time out at Cambridge where they put three second-half goals past the Lilywhites on their way to a 3-0 victory. The Hatters finished a disappointing 11th last season and will be looking to claw their way back up the leagues. They definitely have the strength and depth to do so, as the first five games have illustrated. Whether they have the mettle remains to be seen.
Wycombe have made a pretty rubbish start to their 2016/17 campaign. One win, two draws and two losses sees the Chairboys languishing in 19th position on the League Two table. They’ve not won in three game, going down 2-0 last time out against Colchester.
Luton have made the better start to the league season, their momentum alone should get them over the line against a pretty average Wycombe side.
Mansfield 23/20 | Draw 9/4 | Cambridge 9/4
Mansfield are another club that have made a solid start to the 2016/17 campaign. Wins against Newport County, Yeovil Town and Leyton Orient have seen them occupy fifth place on the League 2 log. They also have one of the division’s best players in Matt Green. The centre-forward has claimed three goals and one assist so far this term and could lead his side to a promotion push should he stay fit.
After narrowly missing out on promotion last season, Cambridge United have made a pretty wobbly start to the new campaign. They’re the only side in the division without a win and sit dead last after five games. If they don’t get out of first gear soon, they could well find themselves in a relegation scrap – and the last thing a club of their size needs is to drop out of the Football League completely.
Mansfield are clearly the better team and offer excellent value at 23/20 – get on!
AFC Wimbledon 5/4 | Draw 9/4 | Chesterfield 2/1
AFC Wimbledon have made a pretty atrocious start to life in League One. They’ve not managed a win yet although they have arrested the run of form that saw them lose their first three games. Two subsequent draws haven’t really aided them in their quest to establish themselves in the division. It’s going to be a long old slog for the men from London.
Chesterfield have slumped a bit after a lively start to the campaign. Defeats in their last two games against Millwall and Shrewsbury Town have seen them slip down to eighth on the table. Ched Evans – the former Sheffield United centre-forward who was jailed for rape – has scored four goals in the first five games of the season as he looks to rebuild his career in the lower leagues.
Chesterfield have far more quality than Wimbledon and should be backed as such – 2/1 is a massive price!
Quad equates to 20/1.
