We have a look at SuperSport United's CAF Confederations Cup clash, as well as Sundowns' CAF Champions League contest, which both take place on 23 September.
Second leg matches are very exciting because caginess goes out the window as the teams involved know exactly what to do to progress to the next stage of the competition. SuperSport United were held to a goalless draw at home by ZESCO in their Confederations Cup quarter-final.
The Champions League holders, Sundowns take a 1-0 advantage to the second leg of their quarter-final in Morocco against Wydad Casablanca. The Brazilians are a team full of quality and over the last couple of years, they have been very able to deal with hostile environments on foreign soil.
Saturday 23 September
CAF Confederation Cup
13/10 ZESCO Utd | Draw 47/20 | SuperSport Utd 37/20 (15:00)
This is a very interesting clash as ZESCO managed to avoid defeat away from home and they just have to win their game at home to go through. The home-ground advantage might work wonders for them, but if SuperSport United manage to get on the scoresheet it would mean they need nothing short of a victory to get to the penultimate stage of the competition.
SuperSport United are a team high on confidence at the moment as they are doing well in the domestic league, having recently booked a spot in the MTN8 final. Matsatsatsa have won two of their opening league games and they seem to have adapted well to coach Eric Tinkler’s tactics.
I’m backing a score draw here.
CAF Champions League
21/20 Wydad Casablanca | Draw 39/20 | Sundowns 29/10 (22:00)
Casablanca will be looking to overturn the 1-0 deficit on home turf when the go head to head with the mighty Brazilians of Pretoria. The Kings of Titles are a well-rested team as the Moroccan league has decided to postpone two of their domestic league games so that they can focus fully on the CAF project.
Sundowns are no longer playing their enterprising football but they are able to grind out results due to winning mentality and experience. The 1-0 advantage means if they score on foreign soil the opponents will need three goals to win which would be insurmountable. The Brazilians crashed out of the MTN8 in the first round and they have won two and lost one of their league games so far.
Coach Pitso Mosimane must be applauded for roping in the experienced Oupa Manyisa who has added the much-needed stability in the middle of the park and allows the coach to rotate his squad without compromising quality. First leg goal hero, Yannick Zakri has found his scoring boots, which very much compliments the creativity of Themba Zwane and Percy Tau behind him.
Back Mamelodi Sundowns to win narrowly.
DOUBLE TIPPED @ 6/1
ZESCO vs SuperSport Draw 47/20
Sundowns Win 29/10
