Our cricket writer previews the second Test between England and Pakistan set to get underway on Friday 1 June at Headingley.
England didn't play particularly poorly in the series opener at Lord's, where Pakistan won inside four days to ensure they can't lose the two-match series.
The home side have done well to avoid a knee jerk reaction, making just one change to their squad. The tourists, meanwhile, have little to no reason to change their XI.
England vs Pakistan | Friday 1 June - Tuesday 5 June | Headingley, Leeds | 12:00
To Win Match
England 3/1
Draw 9/2
Pakistan 11/20
England
While totals of 182 and 242 all out suggest otherwise, England's batsmen weren't awful in London. Alastair Cook was solid in the first innings and Joe Root - accompanied by Jos Buttler and Dom Bess down the order - promising in the second. This time around, they just have to find support from Dawid Malan, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes.
The recalled Keaton Jennings will replace the out-of-form Mark Stoneman at the top of the order - and Bess will likely be retained ahead of fellow all-rounder Chris Woakes. Additional seam from Woakes won't be required, but the spinner has to offer more. Bess bowled just 20.4 overs in Lord's, whereas Headingley will probably require substantially more.
Withstanding the opposition seam attack will be key. The Wasim Akram-esque Mohammad Amir was superb in combination with Mohammad Abbas, whose wicket-to-wicket approach - and penchant for in-swing - could again flummox the home order. England would do well to draw example from, say, New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson by playing the ball as late as possible to combat that inward angle.
It left coach Trevor Bayliss 'deeply disappointed' and 'at a loss' and, in some circles, was billed as an 'accident waiting to happen', but upon genuine reflection England will know defeat at Lord's yielded enough to work on at Headingley. James Anderson, as always, needs to be instrumental in this pursuit.
Pakistan
Pakistan were in Leeds for a Test match in 2010, when they beat Australia in a rare neutral venue appearance for both. This return visit affords them the chance to undo the real hosts, in a period the parties' collective form points to defeat for Root and company and success four Sarfraz Ahmed's troops.
The sub-continental outfit have to tighten their over-rate, if they don't want to see their captain cop an eventual ban. The lot of them were sanctioned for sluggish rates in Lord's. This must quicken up, now. There's a great team dynamic evident, which threatened to derail when Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan exited. Ahmed and other relatively experienced campaigners are doing well team culture-wise.
Mickey Arthur is an invested coach, visibly riding all sorts of emotion on the famous Lord's balcony last week. Off the field, in the build-up, he will be vital in keeping Pakistan grounded and disciplined, so they don't characteristically go from brilliant to bad. They have this tendency, but must avoid it.
Subject to their confidence levels against spin, England would do well to target and exploit Shadab Khan. The leg-spinner wasn't at his best at Lord's and Bairstow and Buttler, in particular, will be important to this. The latter, freed of the glove work and backed as a specialist batsman, should really look to attack the 19-year-old spinner.
Verdict: England 11/20
One hopes a rather wet forecast doesn't occur in Leeds, where England should have enough time to right their wrongs - and square a series lacking a third decider.
