With the 2018 Currie Cup just around the corner, we thought it would be a good idea to take a look five players who could make a mark at this year's competition.
With this year's Currie Cup being cut to one round and running concurrently with the Rugby Championship, we won't see as much of South Africa's elder rugby statesmen as we are used to.
While that is a bit of a disappointment, it does provide a window of opportunity for some of the country's emerging talent to become household names.
5. Marius Louw (Sharks)
The centre is likely to play a prominent role for the Sharks in this campaign with both Lukhanyo Am and André Esterhuizen set to form part of the Springbok set up for the upcoming Rugby Championship.
Louw has already been around for a while and has a number of Currie Cup caps to his name as well as a few Super Rugby outings under the belt.
While he's not the biggest centre to ever take to a field, he is a physical lad who likes to take the ball to the line. He's also an astute tackler and a solid reader of the game.
4. Juarno Augustus (Western Province)
The 2017 Junior Championship Player of the Tournament has seen his career stagnate somewhat this season. He put in a few solid shifts for the Western Province SuperSport Rugby Challenge side but only managed to play one game of Super Rugby - the Stormers final fixture against the Sharks.
The dynamic number 8 will be going all out during this year's Currie Cup to ensure he features for the Stormers in next year's Super Rugby tournament.
He's an absolute beast with ball-in-hand possessing both raw pace and power. I can see him being a key cog for the men from the cape.
3. Madosh Tambwe (Lions)
While Aphiwe Dyanti has seen his stocks rocket this season, his fellow Lions winger, Madosh Tambwe, has seen his drop somewhat. The Zaire-born flyer enjoyed a solid 2017 Currie Cup and looked set to kick on during this season's Super Rugby campaign but niggling injuries and the form of his colleague Dyanti, saw his chances curtailed.
On his day, Tabwe is a world beater as his four-try haul against the Stormers, earlier this year, attests to that. I'm expecting a big showing from he forgotten Lions winger.
2. Enver Brandt (Griquas)
The diminutive winger was in sensational form during the SuperSport Rugby Challenge, bagging 11 tries on his way to topping the try-scoring charts. Blessed with a mesmerizing sidestep, Brandt had defenders at sixes and seven during the recently concluded tournament.
He may be playing for one of the minnow sides but don't be surprised to see Brandt's name near the top of the try-scoring lists come the close of the 2018 Currie Cup.
1. Ali Mgijima
With the likes of Nico Lee and William Small-Smith all likely to be involved in the Cheetahs PRO14 set-up, the door is wide open Ali Mgijima to make his mark during the latter stages of this year's tournament.
While Mgijima is certainly not the most physical centre to turn out in a Free State jersey, he is a dynamo. His blistering speed and sharp turn of foot often sees him leave defenders in his wake.
