A preview on midweek South African horse racing from Monday 27th August to Thursday 30th August 2018. We start at Flamingo Park on Monday, Vaal on Tuesday and Thursday, with the Greyville Polytrack on Wednesday. Get our preview here.
Follow The Form!
Dennis Drier was crowned Trainer Of The Year at the KZN Racing Awards on Friday evening and duly saddled a treble at Greyville on Sunday.
The top team has been somewhat out of sorts for over a month and it could pay to side with them at the
Greyville Polytrack midweek meeting on Wednesday.
Following a form trainer often pays dividends and the Dennis Drier charges could well follow up on their Super Sunday with a nice afternoon on Wednesday.
They saddle five runners with the Brave Tin Soldier filly
Illuminate looking ready to register her second career win when she starts in the fifth race. After two good thirds, she jumps from a decent draw and must be a big runner under Sean Veale.
The Drier stable is strongly represented with a coupling in the sixth where Luke Ferraris takes the 2,5kgs off the Pathfork filly
Via Sacra, while
Dame Commander is lightly raced and could give Sean Veale a big run as a value inclusion in a competitive small field.
The
Hollywood Syndicate fields one runner on the card, in the form of
Giulietta in Race 1. This is her first run in KZN and word from the stable is that she has really turned the corner since arriving in the province a few months ago. Things didn’t seem to go her way on the Highveld, however she has settled in to her new surroundings well and ran a good barrier trial on 20 July. We are expecting her to make a good account of herself and hoping for a top half finish after a 40 week absence from competition.
The week’s action gets under way at
Flamingo Park today where former Alan Greeff runner
Kissmebackfoot could win the first on his Northern Cape debut if bringing his Fairview polytrack form with him. The son of Bold Silvano had a close on fifty percent place strike-rate in PE but was just not strong enough when it counted. This could be his day at his first start for Corrie Lensley.
The Great Britain entire
Timeofthevikings has enjoyed a career resurgence down at Flamingo Park and he can register a hat-trick of wins when he steps up in class in the seventh race under Calvin Habib. He probably has most to fear from the consistent 6yo
Quantity who is knocking hard for a fifth career win.
We are looking forward to eight races on the
Vaal Outside track on Tuesday and
Greener Pastures can give us a good start when she runs in the first, a Workriders event over 1000m.
The Mike de Kock 3yo stayed on for third on her Turffontein debut earlier this month and with some improvement can go very close.
A jockey strike could be the answer in the second race, where Piere Strydom takes the reins for the first time on Paul Matchett’s
Elusive Thunder. The gelding has rather modest form in his five starts but can improve with some expert guidance from the saddle.
After three seconds on the trot, the Stratum filly
Stormborne Thunder can get the Vaal Thursday meeting off to a good start.
Muzi Yeni, who has some strong mounts this week, rides the Mike & Adam Azzie-trained 4yo in the Classic track opener and she gets the perfect opportunity to get out of the maiden ranks.
The boys go 400m further in the second where the consistent
Smart Deal could also break his maiden. The wide draw will be of little consequence for the Lucky Houdalakis son of Ideal World who stays well and could register his first win.
Whiteleaf Hills has taken his run over the weekend well and will go ahead with his planned second start for the
Hollywood Syndicate in Race 3 on Thursday. He stayed on nicely over 1800m at Turffontein on Saturday, beaten only 4,50 lengths into 5th and will no doubt relish the extra 3 furlongs in this MR 68 Handicap. Should everything go to plan, he should be in the shake up and we give him a good quartet chance.
The coming weekend action promises plenty and sees a step up after a quiet August with the running of the Gr3 Spring Spree Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday.
But more about that later in the week.
Enjoy the racing!
Till next time.
