We're in for another bumper round of Premier League action with all 20 teams in action over Saturday and Sunday.
Check out the 5 things to look out for in the EPL this weekend.
Spurs in desperate need of good result
Tottenham – having failed to make any signings during the summer – already look leggy and jaded… and we’re only mid-way through September. Moussa Dembele can’t seem to play past 50-odd minutes while Eric Dier looks a shadow of the dominant force he has been over the last two seasons. Harry Kane’s problems have been well documented with neither Fernando Llorente nor Vincent Janssen capable back-ups for England’s skipper. Even the normally unflappable Mauricio Pochettino appears to be cracking judging by his comments in recent press conferences.
It’ll be interesting to see whether or not Kane gets the rest many fans have been crying out for. If this is the case, expect Lucas Moura to play up front. Of course, if Pochettino does go this route, they lose the excellent hold-up play that Kane offers. Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy will certainly struggle to deal with Brazilian's pace, but will gobble up any crosses that come into the box which could force Spurs to play narrower than they'd like. This is certainly not a game you want to miss this weekend.
Pep looking for response after Lyon nightmare
Pep Guardiola’s recent record in the Champions League with Manchester City leaves a lot to be desired. Four losses on the spin – including three at home – in the competition simply isn’t good enough for the squad that he’s working with. You simply can’t lose against fodder Lyon at home as the pre-tournament favourites.
Fortunately, his charges have a chance to get their groove back when they travel to Wales to face Cardiff City. The newly-promoted Bluebirds really shouldn’t provide much resistance against City. Having said that, Neil Warnock knows how to set-up a team of wind-up merchants against more fancied opposition. Just ask Jonathan Hogg of Huddersfield and Issac Hayden of Newcastle – both of whom were sent off against Cardiff recently. If City keep their heads and play to their strengths, they’ll be fine. If Warnock’s soldiers get under the champions' skin, we could see one of the upsets of the season.
West Ham to cut Chelsea down?
West Ham finally clicked into gear last week as they thrashed Everton 3-1 on Merseyside. The result saw the Hammers pick up their first points of the season under Manuel Pellegrini. It was only a matter of time before the East Londoners found their groove following a very successful summer window. Summer arrival, Andriy Yarmolenko bagged two in the win against Everton with Marko Arnautovic grabbing the third.
Chelsea have won each of their first five Premier League matches but have only won once in their last four meetings with the Hammers. West Ham will be accutely aware of this and will be desperate to take points off of one of the early pace-setters.
Saints to battle without Ings
Danny Ings is definitely playing his way back in Gareth Southgate’s plans. The forward – who completed a loan move to Southampton from Liverpool – has been brilliant for the Saints this season, netting three times in five appearances for the South Coast outfit. With Harry Kane’s fatigue well documented and Jamie Vardy’s international retirement, the door has been left ajar for the Winchester-born marksman who is probably more a complete centre-forward than the likes of Danny Welbeck.
Unfortunately, he won’t be able to take the pitch against his parent club this weekend as Southampton make the trip to Anfield this Saturday. The onus then falls on the shoulders of Charlie Austin or Manolo Gabbiadini to find the back of the net at Anfield on Saturday.
Richarlison’s timely Everton return
Richarlison’s absence from Everton’s last three domestic encounters has been keenly felt by the Toffees. The Brazilian ace was the recipient of a straight red against Bournemouth after a clash with Adam Smith. While a win against Rotherham in the League Cup was never in doubt, poor performances at home against Huddersfield and West Ham have underlined just how important the £40m forward is to Marco Silva’s plans. He’ll be champing at the bit to get at an Arsenal whose defensive naivety has been widely covered this term and indeed exposed by Richarlison and Watford last season.
