Selected Quarterfinals- 26th October 2018
Roger Federer (1) (1/6) vs Gilles Simon (15/4)
8-time Swiss Indoor Champion Roger Federer needed every of his 37 years of experience to overcome a spirited Filip Krajinovic in the opening round here. Federer will be smarting after that semi-final defeat to Coric in Shanghai- which was his 2nd loss to Coric this season.
Federer has lost in three finals this season, which has left a sour taste in the mouth of Federer aficionados. But by any earthly standards, this has been yet another excellent season for Federer.
He claimed his 20th Grand Slam title in Melbourne and picked up titles in Rotterdam, Halle and Stuttgart. Federer’s season has been defined by his defeats, with the Del Potro loss in Indian Wells and Anderson defeat in Wimbledon standing out. With whispers of retirement, Federer will be looking to push through and claim this title in his quest to reach 100 titles.
33 year-old journeyman Gilles Simon has enjoyed another mercurial season, largely underwhelming with the odd dose of quality just thrown in. He reached the quarterfinals at the Grand Prix Hassan II before a bolt from the blue saw him all the way through to the final in Lyon.
Simon then went on a typically downward trend before a really surprising upwards surge on the grass at Wimbledon.
He then had a real dip, winning only one match in five up to and including the US Open. He then typically upended expectations by claiming the Moselle Open Title.
But he looked solid in reaching the quarterfinals last week in the European Open and once again has made it that far this week. Simon will be looking to take advantage of any chinks in the Federer machine.
Federer holds a 6-2 career head-to-head record, and you have to go back all the way to 2008 for Simon’s last victory against the Swiss star. And when you couple that with Federer’s record in this event you get some idea of the issues facing Simon this week. But Federer has shown cracks and perhaps a Federer win in three sets at 26/10 could be worth a shout.
Stefanos Tsitsipas (4) (13/20) vs Danil Medvedev (7) (12/10)
Definitely the breakthrough star of this year’s ATP Tour, Stefanos Tsitsipas really came from nowhere to capture the imagination of the tour.
He reached the semi-finals for a Challenger event in Quimper in the early part of the season, but little could have prepared us for the impact he would have when the clay-court season swung into action. A final in Barcelona was followed by a semi-final appearance in Estoril.
The 20 year-old then showed some grass-court mettle with a quarterfinal run at Rosmalen and an encouraging Round of 16 surge at Wimbledon. So we knew he could play and grass, all the Greek ingénue had to do was show us his hardcourt credentials.
He reached the Washington semi-finals before a glorious run to the Canadian Open Final. In that event he beat Anderson, Zverev, Djokovic and Thiem. Tsitsipas looks set for a brilliant career though he faces a tough test in Danil Medvedev.
At the vanguard of the new Russian invasion, Medvedev has started to bloom late in the season, particularly on the hardcourts. It’s easy to forget that he actually started the year with a victory in Sydney, beating the likes of Fognini and Kohlschreiber in the process.
His season then ebbed and flowed in the lower levels of the tennis stratosphere prior to this final section of the year. He reached the final 16 in Canada before capturing the Winston-Salem Title. He would then go on to capture his 2nd title of the year in Japan, disposing of the likes of Raonic, Shapovalov and Kei Nishikori in the process.
He pushed Federer to three sets in Shanghai and reached the semis in the Kremlin Cup. He thrashed Seppi in the last round and represents a threat to anyone he faces at this moment.
The Russian leads the head-to-head 2-0, having beaten the Greek twice this season: he beat him on the hardcourts of Miami and Flushing Meadows.
Medvedev has to be worth the value at 12/10, especially considering his recent form.
