This will be the first renewal of the Puerto Rico Open since the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in September 2017, which should lend a somewhat bittersweet tinge to events.
Puerto Rico Open | 21 - 24 February |Coco Beach Golf and Country Club, Puerto Rico
This event was first staged in 2008 and was won by Greg Kraft. This will be the 11th edition of an event that has always been an opposite event of the PGA Tour. This week the elite players head out to the WGC Mexico Championship, leaving all the fringe members of the tour to duke it out in a furious clamour for FedEx Cup points. The winner of this event will secure their tour card for two years, though they will not gain an automatic place at the Augusta.
The Coco Beach Golf and Country Club is actually a composite course- comprised of two nine-hole Tom Kite designs: the Championship and International Course. The course was formerly known as Trump International, which strangely makes this one of two events this week with echoes of the divisive American President. It actually lies at the foothills of a rainforest and is certainly susceptible to gusts of wind. It is flat and extremely long on paper, measuring over a whopping 7,500 yards. But players haven’t really been that fazed by the length, with flat condition promoting good scoring. The course is Paspalum, much like that of El Camaleon- home of the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Water is in play on 13 holes while the greens measure around 11 on the stimp.
Daniel Berger- member of the 2017 President’s Cup- is clearly the class act in this field. But there are a variety of former Major Champions in attendance. Two-time Major Champions such as Retief Goosen and Angel Cabrera will look to exploit the absence of the younger stars of the tour. Charl Schwartzel and Peter Uihlein stand out from the crowd in what is sure to be one of the weakest fields of the entire year.

Value Bets
Scott Brown- To Win 25/1, To Place 11/2
There are no players in this field- as limited as it is- who possess the same course form as Scott Brown. Brown won this event in 2013 and boasts an array of pleasing results. He has five top 20 finishes in his six starts at Coco Beach Golf and Country Club. Clearly, he is a player who relishes the opportunity presented when the top brass are away. He also comes into this with reasonable form, with an excellent top 10 finish at Torrey Pines. He had a decent showing at Riviera and should represent decent value here.
Ollie Schniederjans- To Win 35/1, To Place 15/2
Ollie Schniederjans- apart from possessing one of the most unambiguously cool names on the tour- has largely underachieved since becoming a professional. He enjoyed a glittering amateur career but has enjoyed only fleeting success thus far: he really should have won the 2017 Wyndham Championship. He actually possesses a fairly good record in exposed coastal courses. He has a third at the Heritage as well as a second at Cartagena. He also has top 10’s at both the Sony Open and RSM Classic. He also seems to thrive in slightly truncated opposition, finishing fifth at the Barracuda Championship in his last opposite event.
The Man to Beat- Peter Uihlein- To Win 18/1, To Place 39/10
American Peter Uihlein was also an excellent amateur who has perhaps failed to convert that to professional success. He is a big hitter who should feel fairly comfortable around this course: he finished fifth here in his last appearance. Uihlein hasn’t been in the greatest of form but should see this as a golden opportunity to reintroduce some confidence to his game. He actually ended last year reasonably well, highlighted by a tie for 12th at the ultra-competitive Dell Tech event. But perhaps of more significance was his top 10 in the RSM Classic, which much like this course is a wind-affected coastal course.
