For at least four of the Proteas' World Cup squad, the 2019 World Cup is likely to be the last they compete in, but will that quartet be able to aid the team's efforts?
JP Duminy, Hashim Amla, Dale Steyn and Imran Tahir will almost certainly not be competing in the 2023 tournament, with two of them having already announced they will retire from ODI cricket after this year's effort.
Duminy and Tahir have already declared their intention to retire from the ODI format after the World Cup, while Amla and Steyn might still continue on for a spell before finally calling it a day.
The bowling half of the foursome of Proteas veterans will be the side that inspires more confidence going into the tournament, as long as Steyn manages to recover from the shoulder niggle he picked up playing in the IPL.
Tahir has defied age to be consistently among the best white-ball bowlers in the world in the last few years, while Steyn has enjoyed a renaissance in the short formats recently. The veteran leg-spinner took four for 12 in a recent IPL match against the Delhi Capitals - a destructive spell that the Proteas will need him to replicate on ODI cricket's grandest stage.
The four ODIs Tahir played in England in 2017 are to date his only outings in the format in the country, but he bowled well in both the bilateral series against their hosts and the 2017 Champions Trophy. The batting-friendly wickets that are expected to be laid out may also offer him some scope to get among the wickets as the batsmen look to attack.
Duminy and Amla, though, both enter the tournament without much encouragement from their recent form - and with questions being asked about their inclusion. Duminy has struggled for fitness recently but has enjoyed an upswing in batting performance in ODI cricket since he retired from the longer format of the game.
Amla has endured a rough time of late, dealing with illness in the family while also not making the kind of runs he would like across all three formats. The Proteas might consider moving him down the order to cover up his weakness against the moving ball up front, but that would probably mean excluding Rassie van der Dussen, who has been the find of the season for Faf du Plessis' charges.
The Proteas will be banking on the maxim, 'form is temporary, class is permanent', proving to be true in the case of their World Cup squad veterans.
