The 2019 IRB Under 20 Championship reaches its business end this Monday with the first set of play-off fixtures. While there are two cracking semi-finals in-store there's also the battle to avoid the relegation places.

New Zealand will be looking to put the bitter disappointment of missing out on the semi-finals behind them when they take on a decent Welsh outfit this Monday.
The Baby Blacks, having garnered bonus point victories over Scotland and Georgia, needed just one point from their clash with the South Africans to advance to the semis. They looked well on course for this until a late penalty saw them go down 25-17, which saw them miss out on a losing bonus point by just a solitary point.
Wales finished their pool phase on a much more positive note as they beat a mightly improved Fijian outfit 44-28. This was their second pool phase victory after they had beaten Argentina by five points in Round 1.

I'm expecting a big response from the Kiwis here. They will be heartbroken after losing out on a semi-final berth and my money is on the Welsh copping a big loss.

Six Nations rivals Scotland and Italy will square off in the day's other early fixture. Both sides were unable to grab a win in their pools with Scotland going down to Georgia (17-12), South Africa (43-19) and New Zealand 52-33, while Italy lost to Australia (36-12), England (24-23) and Ireland (38-14).

I've liked what I've seen from the 'Scots this term. They gave a good account of themselves against South Africa and New Zealand and would have beaten Georgia if they had not made some rudimentary handling errors. I can see them edging Italy by a very narrow margin.

The Georgians have again given a good account of themselves in a Junior Championship as they put in strong fights against New Zealand and South Africa before beating Scotland 17-12 in their final pool phase game.
Fiji, while not managing a win during the pool phase, also caught the eye at times playing some solid attacking rugby during defeats to France, Wales and Argentina.

Georgia should prove far too strong at the setpiece for the Fijians. I can see their dominance up front allowing them to pass a rather small handicap.

The Baby Boks will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in this year's tournament when they take on reigning champions France in the day's second semi-final.
The Junior Boks are enjoying a brilliant pool phase beating Scotland and Georgia by comfortable margins before rounding out the pool phase with an eight-point victory over arch-rivals New Zealand.
France have endured a slightly more complicated run to the semi-finals with victories over Fiji and Wales being followed by a 21 point loss to Argentina

Chean Roux' boys look the real deal this year and I can see them clearing the handicap against a talented yet ill-disciplined French outfit.

England will be looking to avenge their pool stage defeat to Ireland when they two Six Nations rivals square off in the day's final fixture.
As alluded to earlier, the two sides have already faced off in this year's tournament with the Irish running out 26-42 victors back in Round 1. England bounced back from that defeat with an unimpressive one-point victory over the Italians but then returned to their best form in the final round of pool phase fixtures where they beat an in-form Australian outfit 56-31.
Ireland struggled to maintain their momentum after that Round 1 victory over the English as they went down 45-17 to Australia before beating Italy 14-38 in Round 3.
Verdict: England (-3.5) 17/20
The English will be looking for another big win here and I can see hem achieving it against what looks to be a weary Irish outfit.
