Check out all the action from this weekend's horseracing below!
It feels like only yesterday that we were shouting Rainbow Bridge home at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Super Saturday.
But this coming weekend heralds the first graded stakes feature of the new racing season, which is already a month old!
Time waits for no man, the seasons are changing and it’s great to see some of the forthcoming feature contenders stepping out for what is a traditional pipe-opener.
The Gr3 Spring Spree Stakes is run over the draw-sensitive
Turffontein inside track 1200m and in a field where fitness could be the decider, the former boom two-year-old BOLD EAGLE could be ready to win again.
The quick son of Bold Silvano won his first three on the trot like a budding champion but has gone off the boil. He carries a handy galloping weight in this handicap on Saturday and probably has most to fear from Post Merchants winner LA BELLA MIA, who is drawn immediately on his inside.
The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight is very fast and could run them off their feet with a quick jump from the gates.
The Turffontein Saturday programme is a standalone fixture and one of only three local meets carded from Friday to Sunday.
The Fairview Friday nine-race meeting on the turf is a bumper month-end puzzle and looks a tricky poser.
The card is headed by the non-black-type Founders Trophy but one of the better bets comes up in the fourth race.
Cape raiders Vaughan Marshall and MJ Byleveld have a solid away strike-rate and the well-related DEEPSTON could be worth following in the Pick 6 opener. The son of Var – a half brother to the talented Tap O’ Noth – has met much stronger and looks to have shown the merits of being far better than a one-time winner.
Sunday is the unofficial first day of spring and
Hollywoodbets Greyville hosts an eight-race programme on the Polytrack.
Wayne Badenhorst has nursed FRANKIE TWO SHOES along nicely and the son of Elusive Fort can get us off to a nice start in the opener.
His recent improved form graph has been on the turf but he has course-and-distance form dating back to January. He cannot be a confident selection but has done enough to find the winner’s box.
A bonus for local fans on Sunday could be the first appearance of dual SA Champion jockey Lyle Hewitson, who rides at Sha Tin.
It is the opening day of the new season in Hong Kong and full Hollywoodbets betting facilities are available.
Have a great weekend and enjoy the excitement and positivity that spring brings.
Till next time.
Sunday 1st September 2019
Hollywoodbets Greyville Polytrack
Race 8 – 16.55
1200m – MR 80 Handicap
7 – Jerry The Juggler
Trainer: Alyson Wright
Jockey: Athandiwe Mgudlwa
Wgt: 57.5kg
Draw: 3(11)
Predicted Betting: 4/1
A well-related son of Master Of My Fate. He returns after winning his maiden at just the second time of asking. That was after showing greenness on debut, although, he wasn’t disgraced in that effort either. He does come off a 21-week rest and although his work has been encouraging, he may just need the run.
He has a useful draw to launch his challenge from and Athandiwe Mgudlwa will be seeking an early rails run from a relatively handy position. Based on the strength of the field and the fact that he isn’t a hundred percent tuned up for this, we expect him to finish in the first 4 places and give him an outside winning chance.
Winning Form Comment: Comes off a long rest after winning maiden. Makes handicap debut but has plenty of scope.
PeTeBe’s Top Bet for Fairview (30/08)
Race 7: PAPER TOWN (10)
Jockey: Muzi YENI – Trainer: Gavin SMITH
PAPER TOWN gets to jump from pole position and has his regular jockey, Muzi Yeni in the saddle. He did finish a neck ahead of
BEN-HUR in their last outing over this c & d and as they meet on the same weight terms this afternoon, there should not be too much between them when they reach the wire.
PeTeBe’s Top Bet for Turffontein Standside (31/08)
Race 2: MAJESTIC THUNDER (7)
Jockey: Ryan MUNGER – Trainer: Mike DE KOCK
MAJESTIC THUNDER was running on well on debut over shorter and, on breeding, he should certainly enjoy the extra distance of this race. He would have learnt from the outing and with natural improvement to be expected, he should be right up there at the wire.
PeTeBe’s Top Bet for Hollywoodbets Greyville (01/09)
Race 6: LIQUID IRISH (6)
Jockey: Stuart RANDOLPH – Trainer: Wendy WHITEHEAD
LIQUID IRISH is unbeaten in two starts over the seven furlongs and will be looking to preserve that record here on Sunday. She has a wide draw to beat, but she likes to race handy and may be able to get across without using too much energy. Her Polytrack form is solid.
