Last weekend soccer punters were left disappointed with many of the favoured teams across the European leagues suffering defeats.
It was no different in the Bundesliga where both Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich shockingly lost which left a very unfamiliar look to the log standings as both giant-slayers Augsburg and Hoffenheim picked up maximum points, temporarily placing themselves atop the table following two wins on the bounce each that gives them plenty of encouragement for the season ahead. Let’s get to this week’s selections, make sure you don’t miss out on our 13/2 treble.
Friday 2 October
Union Berlin 5/4
Draw 24/10
Mainz 43/20
Union Berlin earned their first point of the campaign against Borussia Monchengladbach thanks to 20-year-old defender Nico Schlotterbeck’s towering header that had everyone in the box beaten with 10 minutes left for the final whistle. The Iron Ones were in the thick of things striking the crossbar early in the first half but didn’t take their chances and had to settle for a share of the spoils, not an easy feat considering Monchengladbach’s home form last season.
Swedish forward Robin Quaison continued his excellent form by opening the scoring for Mainz but the defence were then put to the sword with four goals in reply to seal their fate against newly-promoted Stuttgart, leaving Mainz with an uphill task at this early stage of battling relegation after two consecutive defeats. Expect a goal-filled clash with the smart money on Both Teams to Score (Yes) at decent odds of 7/10.
Saturday 3 October
Cologne 26/10
Draw 26/10
Borussia Monchengladbach 19/20
Cologne are yet to get off the mark, a disappointing 1-0 defeat at newly-promoted Arminia Bielefeld followed their opening game’s 3-2 loss to Hoffenheim. It still early doors but you sense that the writing is on the wall for the Billy Goats just like Mainz, Cologne’s objective for the season will be trying to beat relegation. Borussia Monchengladbach were my banker of last round but failed to deliver in Breel Embolo’s absence.
The Swiss attacker was taken out of action following a collision with fellow teammate Matthias Ginter when they met on opposing sides during Switzerland vs Germany in the UEFA Nations League. The speedster is only expected to return in two weeks’ time. The visitors did the double over Cologne and I fancy another victory in the same fashion. Take Borussia Monchengladbach by 1 Goal in the Winning Margins market at 3/1 odds.
Werder Bremen 11/10
Draw 49/20
Arminia Bielefeld 47/20
Werder Bremen will be full of confidence coming into this clash after beating Schalke 3-1 in Gelsenkirchen thanks to a Niclas Fullkrug hattrick. Florian Kohfeldt’s Green and Whites will take aim at another fellow relegation candidate this Saturday when they host last season’s Bundesliga 2 winners.
Arminia Bielefeld will travel to Bremen where the hosts have only won twice in 18 league matches. The Blues striker Fabian Klos, top-scorer on route to promotion is yet to find the back of the net and needs to find his form if the visitors are to stand any chance of survival. Both Teams to Score (Yes) is the way to go at 13/20.
Borussia Dortmund 3/10
Draw 7/10
Freiburg 8/1
Borussia Dortmund were bullied in their 2-0 loss to Augsburg. The Black and Yellows found it difficult to play with their usual front foot approach against a tough tackling, no-nonsense Augsburg team that showed the hosts no respect whatsoever.
Freiburg added a point from the 1-1 draw against Wolfsburg to their tally and now sit on four points. Nils Petersen will be aiming to score for a third consecutive game at the Signal-Iduna-Park but Dortmund have to bounce back and I’ll be backing Lucien Favre’s to do just that. Select Dortmund on the (-1) Handicap at 7/10.
Eintracht Frankfurt 14/10
Draw 5/2
Hoffenheim 18/10
Eintracht Frankfurt struggled in their 1-1 draw two weeks ago but their quality shone through as they beat Hertha Berlin 3-1 with Andre Silva, Bas Dost and Sebastian Rode finding the back of the net for the Eagles. Adi Hutter’s team have lost just once in their last 10 Bundesliga matches. Hoffenheim produced the upset of last weekend with a 4-1 win over Bayern Munich.
Croatian forward Andrej Kramaric has begun the campaign in red-hot form scoring seven times in three games for Sebastian Hoeneb’s troops and his teammates will be hoping the former-Leicester City man can replicate these kinds of performances on a weekly basis. The hosts have won the past four meetings, however, this Hoffenheim team is much-improved compared to two seasons’ ago. Both Teams to Score (Yes) at 4/10 is a banker but if you’re looking for more value take Over 3,5 Goals at 11/10.
Stuttgart 28/10
Draw 3/1
Bayer Leverkusen 8/10
Stuttgart have been entertaining to watch since re-joining the top-flight losing 3-2 to Freiburg and bouncing back last week with a resounding 4-1 win over Mainz. The experience of veteran Holger Badstuber is needed to come into the first team to help the group of youngsters tasked with defending.
Bayer Leverkusen come into the clash with back-to-back draws against Wolfsburg and Leipzig which has underwhelmed considering their expectations. Leon Bailey returned to the squad last time out but was only given a 10-minute cameo role as a substitute. The visitors are back to full strength, add Leverkusen to all your weekend multiples at 8/10 odds.
RB Leipzig 1/4
Draw 5/1
Schalke 17/2
Leipzig remain unbeaten with a 3-1 win over Mainz and the 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen. Julian Nagelsmann’s Red Bulls are huge favourites against a struggling Schalke team that was thrashed 5-0 the last time these clubs faced off. Schalke manager David Wagner will be wary that he could possibly be sacked if results continue in this manner. Let’s keep this short and sweet, select Leipzig on the (-1) Handicap at 7/10.
Sunday 4 October
Wolfsburg 8/10
Draw 26/10
Augsburg 33/10
Wolfsburg will have Europa League commitments to fulfil when they travel to Greece to face AEK Athens in midweek action before this matchup. This gives no confidence as the Wolves squad is very thin and are likely to be facing a fresher opponent who come off an impressive victory against Dortmund.
Augsburg are flying-high with back-to-back wins and will be aiming to make it three on the bounce at the VOLKSWAGEN ARENA. I can’t see the visitors losing this one especially as Wolves also have to focus on Europa League. Take Augsburg on the Win/Draw Double Chance at decent odds of 19/20.
Bayern Munich 1/6
Draw 7/1
Hertha Berlin 25/2
Bayern Munich will not complain but their 120-minute Super Cup final clash against Sevilla definitely played a factor during their loss to Hoffenheim. Robert Lewandowski and Leon Goretzka who were instrumental in the Super Cup victory will return to the starting line-up which spells trouble for Bruno Labbadia’s team.
A thrashing of monumental proportions will be dished out to Hertha Berlin in my opinion, who conceded three goals against Eintracht Frankfurt last time out. Let’s go with the same option as last week for the Bayern match, Both Halves Over 1,5 Goals at 15/10.
TREBLE @ 13/2
Eintracht Frankfurt vs Hoffenheim – Over 3,5 Goals 11/10
Bayer Leverkusen Win 8/10
Bayern Munich vs Hertha Berlin – Both Halves Over 1,5 Goals 15/10
