France and Ireland prepared for Six Nations decider
France claimed a 38-21 win over Wales in a friendly international at the Stade de France to tee them up nicely for their Six Nations title decider against Ireland. The Irish, meanwhile, beat Italy 50-17 in their revised tournament fixture to set up a Six Nations “final” of sorts this weekend.
Five-try France looked to be near their best as they thwarted the advances of Wayne Pivac’s Wales with some scintillating moments that harked back to their thunderous displays at the beginning of the year. They will find the going tough against Ireland, though, who came away with a comfortable win over Italy at the Aviva Stadium.
In other international news, Scotland klapped Georgia 48-7 on Friday while England’s clash with the Barbarians on Sunday was called off due to Covid-19.
Chiefs do the double
Exeter earned a hard-fought 19-13 win over Wasps in the Gallagher Premiership final on Saturday to complete a domestic and European double. The Devon-based outfit had recently defeated Racing 92 to win the Champions Cup and their victory on the weekend ensured they became one of only a few sides to achieve the milestone.
Wasps didn’t go down easy and the scores were tied at 13-apiece with just 15-minutes left. The Chiefs weren’t to be denied, though, and Joe Simmonds nailed two penalties later on to seal them the deal.
Lyon upset Toulouse at home
Lyon reeled table-toppers Toulouse in as they claimed a 16-7 Top 14 win at the Stade Ernest-Wallon. After their respective wins over Pau and Bordeaux, Clermont and La Rochelle now find themselves level on points with Le Stade, while Lyon sit just two back.
There were also wins for Toulon, Racing 92, Bayonne and Montpellier on the weekend.
