The second round of Super Rugby unlocked produced two somewhat surprising results with the Cheetahs and Pumas overcoming the Bulls and Griquas respectively. Let's take a look back at the weekend's action.

Cheetahs make big statement at home
The Cheetahs’ 19-17 win over the Bulls at the Toyota Stadium was a timely reminder that Hawies Fourie’s men will be real contenders for the Super Rugby Unlocked title over the next few months. The last time the hosts lost out in Bloemfontein was against the Lions in August of last year and, despite losing captain Ruan Pienaar early on, they managed to extend their exceptional home record thanks to some sparkling plays and good decision-making. They maintained their place at the summit of the standings with nine points as they prepare to travel to Johannesburg to tackle the Lions this weekend.
Jake White’s Bulls outfit had the chance to snatch a draw at the death but ultimately had to settle for a losing bonus-point. They did well to fight back late on but will now turn their attention to their upcoming home clash with the Sharks.
Pumas trump Griquas in Kimberley
The Pumas recorded a vital 27-21 win over the Griquas at Tafel Lager Park as they bounced back from their loss to the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein the week prior. With many viewing the battle to avoid the wooden spoon this season as a duel between these two sides, the Pumas’ positive result certainly puts them in the ascendency with some tricky fixtures to come for both outfits.
One or two more upset wins for the men from Mpumalanga should see them secure sixth place at the very least, while the Griquas will have their work cut out for them if they are to avoid finishing last. They head into their bye this week with plenty to ponder.
Stormers pip Lions at Newlands
The Stormers managed to secure a 23-17 win over the Lions in an error-riddled contest in Cape Town. The game was marred by handling errors and ill-discipline from both sides, but it was the Stormers who got over the line in the end to kick their season off with a bang. John Dobson’s men next travel to Nelspruit to take on the Pumas at the Mbombela.
The Lions’ loss was their second in consecutive weeks and things ain’t getting any easier with the Cheetahs visiting Emirates Airline Park this weekend. Another loss for them would be catastrophic for their campaign.
