Selected Round of 32 Matches- 3rd, 4th November
Stefanos Tsitsipas (2) (4/11) vs Ugo Humbert (9/4)
Tsitsipas is seeded 2nd this week, a clear indication of the number of notable absentees there are in Paris. A quarterfinalist here last year, 2020 has been suitably chaotic for the Greek. Last year’s ATP Finals Champion has shifted seamlessly between brilliant and indifferent form. Prior to lockdown he had just won the Open 13 and reached the Dubai final. He reached the Western and Southern Open semi-final in his first post-lockdown event. But a poor US Open was followed by an opening-round loss in Rome. But he salvaged his clay-court campaign with a final in Germany and a semi-final run at Roland Garros: that was his 2nd Grand Slam semi-final thus far. But he was poor in Vienna last week, struggling to overcome journeyman Struff before bowing out to Dimitrov. Tsitsipas will be earmarking this week as a real opportunity in the light of all the absentees.
This match has upset victory written all over it. 22-year-old Frenchman Ugo Humbert is in the midst of a breakthrough year on the tour. He has won two titles this year, starting with the season-opening ASB Classic. He would also reach the semi-finals of the Delray Beach event. But of far more importance was his recent win in Antwerp. He brought his characteristic gung-ho approach to that indoor hardcourt event, accounting for the likes of Pablo Carreno Busta and Dan Evans along the way. He reached a career-high ranking of 32 last month and is one of the most explosive talents on tour. One disappointment for the hometown hero will be the lack of fans. The French Tennis Federation had little choice but to omit fans given the recent resurgence of Covid in France.
This will be the first time that these two aggressive baseliners would have met. Humbert will be looking to build on his recent Antwerp win and his tenacious victory over Casper Rudd here. Tsitsipas had various issues with his serve in Vienna, which the ultra-aggressive Humbert will be looking to exploit. I really think there’s a chance of a Humbert victory.
Borna Coric (15) (1/8) vs Jordan Thompson (5/1)
A former Junior World Number One, Borna Coric has taken some time to establish himself on the ATP Tour. The likes of Zverev and Tsitsipas (or even Medvedev and Rublev) have evolved beyond the Croatian. Coric is now ranked 24th in the world and will be looking to exploit this slightly undercooked Masters event: the likes of Djokovic and Thiem have chosen to eschew this week’s event. While Coric has been wildly inconsistent this year, there have been some encouraging signs in the post-lockdown period. He reached his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at the US Open: this included an epic five-set victory over 4th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Perhaps even more pertinent to this event was his excellent performance on the indoor hardcourts in St Petersburg a few years back. He reached the final, ultimately losing to one of tennis’ hottest properties: Andrey Rublev. This could be exactly what Coric needs to regain some lost career momentum.
26-year-old Aussie Jordan Thompson has slowly started to build some momentum over the past few years. 2018 was something of a breakthrough year for Thompson. He reached eight finals on the Challenger Tour, winning three of those finals. He then took that improvement into 2019, reaching his maiden ATP Final at the Rosmalen event. 2020 has also seen further evolution. The World Number 61 reached his maiden Grand Slam 4th round at this year’s US Open. This represents a distinct sign of progress for the Aussie. Thompson has been quite disappointing since that Flushing Meadows run. His indoor hardcourt form has been atrocious (he will be hugely relieved for his opening round victory over Delbonis this week).
Their head-to-head record is short and sweet. Coric won their only encounter at this year’s US Open. Coric reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal by ending Thompson’s best-ever run at a Slam. Coric decimated the Aussie at Flushing Meadows and will be the overwhelming favourite in this match. Thompson can maybe use that experience and be better prepared this time. Coric to win in three sets at 3/1 has some value.
