Our footy writer previews this upcoming weekend's set of Spanish La Liga matchups.
And then there was one! Real Madrid are now the only undefeated team in the Spanish La Liga after Villarreal suffered their first loss of the season, going down to Eibar by a 2-1 scoreline. The Yellow Submarine are now out of the top four, with Atletico Madrid taking their place after their 4-2 victory over Malaga last weekend. Barcelona are now in second place after Sevilla dropped points at Sporting Gijon, while they claimed maximum points at the Nou Camp.
The tie of the round sees Luis Enrique’s charges travel crosstown to take on Jorge Sampaoli’s Sevillistas in what promises to play a big part in the early stages of the title race. Let’s get to it then, shall we.
Friday 4 November
Malaga 7/10 | Draw 26/10 | Sporting Gijon 17/4
Gameweek 11 kicks off with a Friday night clash between 11th-placed Malaga and relegation prospects, Sporting Gijon. Malaga’s three-game undefeated run came to an end as they fell to the ground at the hands of a rampant Atletico Madrid side. At home is where they strived so far this season, though, winning their last three La Liga matchups at La Rosaleda Stadium. Sporting Gijon claimed their second successive draw at home to Sevilla last weekend, but still find themselves winless in seven games – including five defeats.
The home win is the best way to go here.
Saturday 5 November
Granada 16/10 | Draw 43/20 | Deportivo 7/4
Bottom-placed Granada have been absolutely dreadful this season, and look destined for the drop to Segunda. It may only be 10 games into the season, but they are yet to show any signs of having the calibre to compete in such a competitive league. They’ve been smashed by the big boys and the newcomers on the block. Every team is having a go at them. Deportivo suffered a disappointing result themselves on Monday night, as they let their one-goal lead slip to allow Valencia a share of the spoils. Depor are now a place above the relegation zone, and are winless in three games.
It’s a long shot, but I’m backing Depor to end their miserable run against the league’s worst team.
Real Sociedad 39/10 | Draw 26/10 | Atletico Madrid 15/20
Real Sociedad showed what they’re all about this season, picking up their fifth win of the campaign at Leganes, coming out 2-0 victors. That result made it back-to-back victories for Eusebio Sacristan’s side. At home, Sociedad have won three consecutive matches and will need to be at their very best when they take on Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side have suffered just one defeat so far this season, losing 1-0 at Sevilla after going a man down. Atleti are known for their rock-solid defence, but in their last three games, they’ve put 11 goals past their opposition. Yannick Carrasco and Kevin Gameiro scored their fourth and fifth goal of the campaign as they both bagged a brace in Atletico’s 4-2 win over Malaga last weekend. Atleti did the double over their opponents last season, winning this tie 2-0.
Simeone’s side should be backed once again; this time at a decent price of 15/20.
5/4 Osasuna | Draw 22/10 | Alaves 23/10
Osasuna pulled off one of the best results of Gameweek 10, as they held onto a 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao. They do, however, still find themselves in the relegation zone coming into the new week. Alaves, on the other hand, managed to break through Real Madrid’s defence, but it meant very little as they still went down by a 4-1 scoreline. In Osasuna’s last six games, the Both Teams To Score market has been triggered, proving that there is usually goals involved when the Reds step on the pitch. Alaves are winless in four games, but should find the back of the net against an underperforming Osasuna side.
Both Teams To Score is the tip at 17/20.
Las Palmas 19/20 | Draw 5/2 | Eibar 28/10
Las Palmas pulled off one of the comebacks of the season last weekend as they came from three goals down to split the spoils with Celta Vigo, ending the game at 3-3. Los Amarillos are still winless in six games, but surprisingly have been a joy to watch. Up next for the Basque side is a clash against Eibar, who were the first team to beat Villarreal this season. It was their first win in four games, but puts them in a much better position coming into week 11. Eibar are now above their opponents in the standings, but have lost their last three games against the Yellows.
At 19/20, Las Palmas are a decent price to make it four on the trot against their counterparts.
Sunday 6 November
Real Madrid 1/14 | Draw 10/1 | Leganes 25/1
In the 15 games that Real Madrid have played in all competitions – at the time of writing – Los Blancos are undefeated, winning 11 of those matches. Zinedine Zidane’s men conceded as early as the sixth minute against Alaves, but a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick along with an Alvaro Morata finish secured an emphatic 4-1 win for Madrid. Ballon d’Or bound, Ronaldo, has now scored 350 league goals in 466 games over his career. Leganes dropped down to 15th on the log, after losing three consecutive matches in La Liga.
Madrid should hammer Leganes here; back Over 1.5 Goals in Both Halves at 5/4.
Celta Vigo 39/20 | Draw 22/10 | Valencia 29/20
Celta Vigo were thwarted last time out as they failed to keep their three-goal lead intact, as Las Palmas pulled off one of the comebacks of the season to end the game at 3-3. It was two points drop instead of one point gained as Celta will be kicking themselves in the foot after letting a glorious lead slip out their hands. Valencia, despite drawing on Monday, have somewhat picked up the pieces from their early-season tragedy. Only Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have beaten them in the last six matches, as they refuse to go down to just anybody. Celta have won their last three games at home, but this Valencia side could spring up a surprise or two on their day.
Choose the safest option and back Both Teams To Score at 6/10.
Espanyol 39/20 | Draw 22/10 | Athletic Bilbao 29/20
Espanyol moved up five places in the standings after an impressive 1-0 win at Real Betis. Quique Sanchez Flores’ side are now undefeated in four La Liga matches, drawing three times. It’s at home where Espanyol struggle, though. The Catalonia-based side are winless in five games at the RCDE Stadium. Athletic Bilbao remained in sixth place but failed to capitalize on home advantage as they drew 1-1 with Osasuna in a game which many (including myself) expected to be one-way traffic. Bilbao are now winless in two games, and will need to pick it up if they are to push for UEFA Champions League football next season.
This is a dodgy one, but Both Teams To Score at 17/20 looks the best bet for the tie.
Villarreal 11/20 | Draw 3/1 | Real Betis 5/1
Villarreal fell out of the top four last weekend as they suffered their first loss of the campaign, going down to Eibar. At home, though, the Yellow Submarine have won four of their five matches, scoring 12 and conceding just three. Real Betis are finding it difficult to get into the top half of the table as they lost for a fifth time in La Liga last weekend. Gustavo Poyet’s side are now 13th, and will need to be at their very best to get something from this game. The last two meetings between these sides have ended in draws, but this time round, the Yellow Submarine should claim maximum points.
Back Villarreal at 11/20 and include in all multiples.
Sevilla 4/1 | Draw 34/10 | Barcelona 11/20
The tie of the round sees Sevilla host Barcelona in what promises to be a spectacular showdown. Jorge Sampaoli’s Sevilla side have won all five of their home matches, scoring 12 goals in the process. Barcelona, on the other hand, have lost just one game this season and have been high-scoring themselves. Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi are both tied at the top of the goalscorers table with seven goals apiece. Recent meetings against Barca have been tough for Sevilla, with the Catalans winning the last three matches without conceding. It won’t be that easy this time as Sevilla have proven to be a tough nut to crack this season. That said, goals will always be expected when these sides step on the pitch.
The best bet here is to take Over 2.5 Goals + Both Teams To Score at 7/10.
TREBLE @ 7/2
Atletico Madrid Win 15/20
Villarreal Win 11/20
Malaga Win 7/10
