Our local football writer previews the Telkom Knockout quarter-finals, which gets underway on Saturday.
The round of 16 saw all eight home teams progress to the quarter-finals. And looking at the fixtures this weekend, home advantage could play a huge role yet again. Newly crowned African champions Sundowns and high-flying SuperSport will go toe-to-toe in what is undoubtedly the tie of the round.
With four enticing matches coming our way, it will be well worth a look to see just which teams are good value for money. That’s enough chatter for now, let’s go to it!
Saturday 5 November
Baroka 12/10 | Draw 21/10 | Cape Town City 21/10
Baroka dispatched Platinum Stars 3-1 in the round of 16 courtesy of a brace from Mzwanele Mahashe. That was Baroka’s first and only home win of the season and they will be looking to build on that here.
In the league, Baroka are ninth on the standings with just eight points from seven matches. However, they did garner a point from their hard-earned goalless draw away to Kaizer Chiefs on Wednesday evening. That draw couldn't have come at a better as Baroka were in need of a serious morale boost.
Their opponents, Cape Town City, claimed a 2-0 victory over Bloemfontein Celtic, but the victory only came in extra time. They followed that up with a 2-1 league victory at Sundowns, before edging Bloem Celtic 1-0.
Baroka edged Cape Town City 2-1 in the league and the latter will be eager to make it two from two. However, the Capetonians are in top form with three consecutive wins in all competitions and are looking the better team at present.
Get on the away win.
Mamelodi Sundowns 7/10 | Draw 23/10 | SuperSport 4/1
CAF Champions League winners Sundowns will be keen to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet but high-flying SuperSport are another obstacle to get past.
CAF Champions League commitment has seen the Brazilians fall five games behind in the PSL. Downs claimed a routine 2-0 victory over Polokwane in the round of 16 and with their streak of six wins on the trot against SuperSport, they will be extremely confident of advancing to the next round.
SuperSport worked their socks off in the previous round, earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ajax Cape Town in extra-time. Matsatsantsa are unbeaten in their last seven games with three straight victories, including a 6-1 demolition of Orlando Pirates.
A tight affair is expected with both teams in fine form and he sides are tipped to cancel each other out.
Orlando Pirates 5/10 | Draw 5/2 | Highlands Park 6/1
Orlando Pirates and Highlands Park are struggling to find their feet. Both sides are looking vulnerable at present, making this encounter all the more intriguing.
The Buccaneers progressed from the first round with a 2-1 home win over Golden Arrows. Their league form, however, is a major cause for concern as they are now five matches without a victory, including a 6-1 mauling at the hands of SuperSport on Tuesday evening.
Highlands Park are placed 12th on the table with only six points from seven matches. They are winless in six league matches, but can take credit for their well-deserved 2-0 home win against Chippa United in the Telkom Knockout round of 16.
Pirates need a massive performance for their die-hard supporters as well as themselves after their midweek mauling at SuperSport. Their
may be dented after last week, but I still feel they will do enough to get up for the win.
Sunday 6 November
Kaizer Chiefs | Draw 3/1 | Free State Stars 9/1
Kaizer Chiefs will take on Free State Stars at the Moses Mabhida in the final Telkom Knockout matchup on Sunday afternoon.
Amakhosi are unbeaten an unbeaten run of eight matches in all competitions, keeping clean sheets in the last seven of those games. The Glamour Boys were pushed all the way by Maritzburg United in the first round, beating the Team of Choice 4-2 on penalties after playing out a goalless draw.
Free State Stars have took to the new campaign just as expected, looking unorganized and disinterested. Ea Lla Koto are placed 14th on the PSL table without a victory after eight matches, which baffles me as to how they managed to overcome Bidvest Wits in the round of 16.
Chiefs are unbeaten against Free State Stars in the last 11 meetings and I just can’t see that changing here.
The home win looks a banker bet.
