Our footy scribe previews round 22 of the 2016/17 English Premier League campaign.
Gameweek 22 of the English Premier League sees Chelsea seven points clear of nearest challengers Tottenham at the top of the table. The Blues will welcome strugglers Hull City to Stamford Bridge, while Spurs face a tough test away to Manchester City with both teams in desperate need of points.
Arsenal will host a Burnley side yet to win an away game this season and Manchester United will seek a return to winning ways when they travel to Stoke. Liverpool have arguably the easiest fixture out of the top six as they host bottom-of-the-log Swansea. There are other exciting matches to look forward to this weekend with enticing odds on offer.
Saturday 21 January
Liverpool 2/9 | Draw 52/10 | Swansea 10/1
We kick things off with a clash between third-placed Liverpool and bottom side Swansea. Jurgen Klopp’s side are still searching for their first win in 2017 following a 1-1 draw at Manchester United. Liverpool will feel they should have taken all three points from a game in which their understrength team gave absolutely everything, only to succumb to a late equaliser.
The Reds will be confident of returning to winning ways against the Swans, having beaten them 2-1 in October. Paul Clement’s side have lost six of their last seven matches, including back-to-back.
The home win is a banker bet – back them to Win By Three Or More Goals at 14/10.
Bournemouth 8/10 | Draw 51/20 | Watford 33/10
Bournemouth, 11th in the Premier League, will seek to end their woeful run of form when they host 14th-placed Watford. Eddie Howe’s side are winless in their last three matches with back-to-back losses against Millwall (in the FA Cup) and Hull City.
The visitors make the trip to the Vitality Stadium off a goalless draw at home to Middlesbrough, extending their winless run in the league to six matches. Walter Mazzarri's side have lost their last five away games, shipping 14 goals while scoring just twice.
Back the home win at 8/10.
Crystal Palace 43/20 | Draw 22/10 | Everton 13/10
Crystal Palace will be desperate to end their poor run this weekend when they host Everton. Sam Allardyce’s side are winless in seven Premier League matches, a sequence that has seen them plummet down the table. The Eagles have lost six of their last seven games at Selhurst Park, including three on the spin.
Everton come into this fixture high on confidence following their 4-0 thrashing of Manchester City, their second straight victory. The Toffees are unbeaten in four Premier League matches with three wins.
The away win is a top bet.
Middlesbrough 14/10 | Draw 21/10 | West Ham 2/1
Middlesbrough are the Premier League's lowest goal scorers and last Saturday’s draw at Watford extended their winless streak to four matches. Following back-to-back goalless draws in the league, Aitor Karanka is on the verge of signing Chelsea’s Patrick Bamford, who spent the 2014/15 season on loan at the club where he scored 17 league goals as they reached the Championship play-off final. The Teesiders will be hoping they can end their drought in front of goal and pick up maximum points against West Ham.
Andy Carroll’s stunning overhead kick stole the show as West Ham secured a valuable 3-0 win over Crystal Palace. Slaven Bilic’s side showed no signs of missing the wantaway Dimitri Payet and they’ll be looking to build on that victory.
A tight affair is expected and Under 2.5 Goals is the way to go at 6/10.
9/2 Stoke City | Draw 28/10 | Man United 6/10
Man United will look to return to winning ways when they visit the bet365 Stadium to take on ninth-placed Stoke City. The Potters are riding a two-match winning streak in the Premier League, beating Watford and Sunderland last time out. Mark Hughes’ men are unbeaten in their last four home matches and will look to cause an upset against Jose Mourinho’s title-chasers.
The Red Devils come into this tie off a hard-fought 1-1 draw against rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. They’re unbeaten in 16 games (across all competitions) and have won their last four away matches.
The visitors are tipped confidently – include them in all multiples.
West Brom 7/10 | Draw 26/10 | Sunderland 4/1
West Brom are eighth in the Premier League table but they were shown firsthand how big the gulf is between themselves and the top six as Tottenham ran out 4-0 winners in a one-sided encounter at White Hart Lane. Although Spurs were very good, the Baggies gave the ball away far too easily, invited pressure on themselves and even their usual strengths such as defensive organisation and set-piece prowess seemed to desert them.
Tony Pulis will be hoping for an improved performance against Sunderland and will be happy to be back at the Hawthorns, where his side have won four of their last five games. David Moyes’ side suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Stoke City, extending their winless run to five matches.
Their last four games on the road have all ended in defeat and the hosts are tipped to collect three points.
Manchester City 11/10 | Draw 49/20 | Tottenham 9/4
Tottenham will be hoping to keep the pressure on leaders Chelsea when they travel to fifth-placed Manchester City on Saturday. Spurs are aiming to secure a seventh consecutive Premier League victory while City are looking to bounce back from a humiliating 4-0 defeat to Everton last weekend. Mauricio Pochettino's men will be keen to lay down a marker against another direct rival and, having beaten City at home earlier in the season, will be brimming with confidence.
Spurs are in a rich vein of form and it’s going to take something special to beat them. Man City suffered their heaviest defeat under Guardiola last time out and will be targeting a fourth straight home win.

Sunday 22 January
Southampton 9/10 | Draw 23/10 | Leicester 32/10
A 1-0 loss to Burnley made it four top flight defeats on the bounce for Southampton, who slipped to 13th in the table. While their placing is still comfortable in terms of a gap to the bottom three, the hopes they previously had of making a dash for seventh have taken a dent. The Saints will look to end their poor run against 15th-placed Leicester City.
The Foxes were thoroughly outclassed 3-0 by a clinical Chelsea side who look like romping to the Premier League title. The Foxes appeared short of confidence and ideas and managed just one shot on target all game. Claudio Ranieri’s side are yet to win on the road this season, losing seven of their 10 games.
With their poor away form, along with Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Daniel Amartey on Africa Cup of Nations duty, the Saints are tipped confidently.
Arsenal 2/11 | Draw 11/2 | Burnley 25/2
Arsenal returned to the top four with a handsome 4-0 victory at Swansea City, consigning Paul Clement to a demoralising defeat in his first Premier League game in charge of the Swans. The Gunners will be looking to build on that performance and complete the double over Burnley, having beaten them 1-0 in October thanks to a 92nd-minute goal from Laurent Koscielny. Arsene Wenger’s side are unbeaten in their last nine matches at the Emirates Stadium, winning seven times – including four on the spin.
Joey Barton helped Burnley move into the top-half of the Premier League table with a narrow 1-0 victory over Southampton. Sean Dyche will be hoping his side can build on that result, but their away form doesn’t bode well. The Clarets have lost eight of their nine travels, shipping 20 goals while scoring only three.
Back the hosts to Win To Nil at 7/10.
Chelsea 2/11 | Draw 11/2 | Hull City 13/1
Chelsea made light of striker Diego Costa’s absence to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League with an impressive 3-0 win at champions Leicester. Marcos Alonso scored early in each half to give the Blues control of the game, and the clinching third goal came from fellow Spaniard Pedro.
Antonio Conte’s side will look to claim a ninth consecutive victory at Stamford Bridge against Hull and whether Costa plays or not, Chelsea should have enough firepower to see off the Tigers. Marco Silva’s side, who are 18th in the table, have lost their last eight games on the road – failing to score in five of those games.
The Blues are tipped to Win To Nil at 7/10.
