Our tennis writer previews the ATP Swiss Indoors which takes place from Monday 23 October - Sunday 29 October.
The ATP Tour is truly heating up as the season closes in on London and the majestic O2 Arena. Four players have already qualified for the season ending event. The Herculean efforts of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal put them miles ahead of the chasing pack, while next generation superstars Alex Zverev and Dominic Thiem have also secured qualification.
Several players vying for their spots have opted for the picturesque setting of Vienna and the Erste Bank Open 500. Those include vanquished Stickholm Open finalist Grigor Dimitrov, as well as the likes of Sam Querrey, Kevin Anderson and Carreno Busta.
ATP Tour: Swiss Indoors | Monday 23 October - Sunday 29 October | Basel, Switzerland
Stockholm Champion Juan Martin Del Potro is hoping to make a late surge for the top eight, and the Argentine boasts a wonderful career record in Basel: the lanky Del Potro has twice defeated Federer en route to winning the event. Marin Cilic and David Goffin will also hope to make some headway on the indoor hardcourts of Basel this week. But all eyes will be on home favourite- and universal favourite- Roger Federer. Fresh off a straight sets dismantling of nemesis Nadal in Shanghai, the Swiss behemoth will be emboldened by the late withdrawal of the Spaniard. Victory here will keep his dreams of usurping Rafa as world number 1 well and truly alive.
Past Champions
2016: Marin Cilic
2015: Roger Federer
2014: Roger Federer
2013: Juan Martin Del Potro
2012: Juan Martin Del Potro
Quarter 1
Roger Federer clearly dominates the first quarter of the draw and will take some beating considering both his historical form in Basel and his current form. The Swiss star is aiming for his eighth Basel title in his first appearance here since 2015. He has a daunting first round opponent in Francis Tiafoe. He famously almost beat Federer in the first round in Flushing Meadows and will provide a stern opening test. Denis Shapovalov would make the ideal quarter-final opponent for Federer on an aesthetic level. I think that the young Russian will stand a good chance of overcoming the other seed in the group- the metronomic Mannarino.
Likely to Progress: Federer and Shapovalov
Quarter 2
This one looks to be the most straightforward section on paper. David Goffin has added motivation with the push for a berth in the year ending event in London, and I don’t really foresee many obstacles en route to a semi-final place. He will likely play veteran Lorenzi in the second round while American Jack Sock is the other seed in the group. Perhaps another veteran in the form of Robin Haase may provide a slight shake-up, but it looks to be a showdown between Sock and Goffin to me, with the Belgium a huge favourite to progress.
Likely to Progress: Goffin and Sock
Quarter 3
By contrast, the third quarter has far more leeway for the imagination, with the upwardly mobile Juan Martin Del Potro the headline act. But his first round encounter has banana peel written all over it. Joao Sousa has picked up some impressive victories this season and will be facing Del Potro fresh off his exertions in Sweden. Ryan Harrison may Dolgopalov will also provide a stiff test for Bautista-Agut in the second round. I have a feeling that Bautista-Agut may be an early casualty amongst the seeded players.
Likely to Progress: Harrison and Del Potro
Quarter 4
Defending champion Marin Cilic has a tricky first encounter against veteran Spanish baseliner Fernando Verdasco. The left-handed Spaniard has experienced a resurgence of late, culminating in an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Stockholm Open last week. Mishca Zverev has slowly accumulated a fairly decent season while his younger brother Alex has taking the tennis world by storm. I do however think that both Florian Meyer and Jared Donaldson will prove difficult matches for the German.
Likely to Progress: Marin Cilic and Florian Meyer
Matches to Watch
Well I foresee both Juan Martin Del Potro and Marin Cilic progressing past their first round matches, I still think that their respective opponents represent the best value in the opening matches. Verdasco has been playing great tennis and could easily outdo Cilic with an explosive all-round performance. Del Potro will also be feeling the physical exertion of his recent success and may find Sousa a tough nut to crack.
Value Bets
Sousa to beat Del Potro at 38/10.
Verdasco to beat Cilic at 26/10.
