We preview the second and final T20 International between South Africa and Bangladesh set to get underway on Sunday 29 October at Senwes Park.
Following yet another emphatic win, the Proteas will look to round off the visit of Bangladesh with another dominant display in the second T20 in Potch on Sunday.
Bangladesh will be eager to leave the South African shores with at least one win having lost all three ODIs and the two Tests. But that’ll be easier said than done, as the hosts are in fine form at the moment.
South Africa vs Bangladesh | Sunday 29 October | Senwes Park, Potchefstroom | 14:30
To Win Match
South Africa 1/9 | Tie 35/1 | Bangladesh 57/10
South Africa
Having won the toss, JP Duminy – who was deputising in the absence of the injured Faf du Plessis – elected to bat in Bloem. The decision paid off as Quinton de Kock and AB de Villiers put on a quick-fire 79 for the first wicket before the latter was caught off the bowling of Mehidy.
There were also telling contributions from David Miller (25 from 19) and Farhaan Behardien (36 off 17) as the hosts reached 195/4 from their 20 overs. It was always going to be an uphill battle for the already deflated tourists to chase down such a massive total.
Still, don’t let the fact that the opposition isn’t the strongest detract from South Africa’s overall performance. With no senior pacers in the side, the attack coped well, especially after Soumya Sarkar and Mohammad Saifuddin got the visitors’ chase off to the perfect start.
Andile Phelukwayo impressed as always, while the Bangladeshi batsmen struggled to deal with Robbie Frylinck and his variations. Dane Paterson also looked good after a rather forgettable series. He’ll look for a repeat performance in Potchefstroom as he continues to grow into an international standard limited overs bowler.
I’m not sure how many changes we’ll see going into the next match. I do know that Tabraiz Shamsi needs to come in for Aaron Phangiso. Phangiso didn’t have the best of outings in Bloem, conceding 30 in his three overs. Shamsi could well concede as many, but he’s more of an attacking option and should get among the wickets in the middle overs.
Bangladesh
Yes, they lost again, but there was some fight from the Bangladeshi’s this time around. They’ve been comprehensively rolled in all of the other matches across all formats before Thursday evening. Shakib Al Hasan and his men will look to take that confidence forward into the next match.
Although their bowling took a bit of a pounding in good batting conditions, they batted well. Of course, not well enough to win, they simply lost wickets too regularly for any telling partnerships to form. That will need to be remedied going forward.
There’s no reason why a team that contains the considerable talent Shakib, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Sabbir Rahman, can’t grab a win in the shortest format of the game on South African soil. Unfortunately, they will need the Proteas top order to underperform if they are to get close to chasing or defending a total.
Their bowling has been so average throughout the tour. Mehidy and Rubel Hossain were again the pick of the bowlers along with Mahmudullah. Taskin Ahmed continues to struggle while Mohammad Saifuddin and Shaiful Islam were both taken apart with ease by de Kock and Co.
Verdict: South Africa 1/9
Again, no real value here. The South Africans really should win this quite comfortably. Even with such an inexperienced bowling attack, they have more than enough firepower in the top and middle order to beat anyone on their day. Add this bet to all weekend multiples to squeeze a bit more value out of the price.
