Exeter will be looking to carry their solid 2017 form into the New Year when they take on the Newcastle Falcons on Sunday the 7th of January.
In perhaps one of the games of the weekend, runaway league-leaders Exeter visit Kingston Park to take on a Newcastle side that has won their last five on the bounce. Since none of the “big dogs” seem to have it in them to take the Chiefs down, maybe the minnows can produce the goods?

Newcastle Falcons
Who would have thought that, 12-games into the regular season, the unfancied Falcons would be sitting in fifth-place? Certainly not I, and it is testament to the wonderful character of a club that last tasted Premiership glory back in 1998 that they have given themselves a real shot at not just securing a playoff appearance at season’s end, but also making the cut for the 2018/19 Champions Cup. Everybody loves an underdog; and here’s hoping they can maintain this terrific standard right to the end of the campaign.
While the team from Tyne and Wear have every reason to believe that they can go out this weekend and claim what would be the biggest scalp of them all, the reality is that they may find themselves falling just short. The Chiefs are untouchable at the moment, and common-sense dictates that we are in for a seriously lop-sided contest.
Newcastle relied heavily on opposition mistakes in their win over London Irish last week, and their three-scores came from their ability to exploit errors more than actual creative ingenuity. They may struggle to create chances against such a well-oiled Chiefs machine this weekend.
Exeter Chiefs
Another week, another Chiefs' Premiership win. Rob Baxter’s side are in a league of their own at the moment, and you have to trace back seven-wins to find their last loss; a 20-13 reverse against Leicester in September.
Currently sitting pretty 10-points ahead of their closest opposition, one can only see them going on to host another semi-final and give themselves the best possible shot at dominating the English domestic scene for yet another season.
As gutsy a side as they may be, Newcastle will battle to find inroads into such a staunch Exeter defence. The Chiefs’ simple rugby-playing philosophy - one favouring formula over flair - will be difficult for their hosts to stop this week.
Verdict: Exeter 4/10
I’m expecting the Chiefs to power to another win this weekend, and to end this fantastic Falcons run. They should also manage to steal another bonus-point away from Kingston Park.
