We preview all three Momentum One Day Cup matches set to take place around the country on Friday 5 January.
All six franchises will be in action in Momentum One Day Cup action this Friday with the headline fixture undoubtedly the WSB Cape Cobras’ clash against the Multiply Titans.
Elsewhere, the Diamond Oval in Kimberley will see the VKB Knights take on the bizhub Highveld Lions while the Warriors play host to the Hollywoodbets Dolphins in Port Elizabeth.
Titans vs Cobras | Friday 5 January 2018 | SuperSport Park Centurion | 13:30
To Win Match
Titans 53/100 | Tie 35/1 | Cape Cobras 31/20
We open things up this Friday at SuperSport Park Centurion where the table-topping Titans go head to head with the Cobras. The hosts will no doubt be sharper heading into this fixture following their 32-run win over the Lions on Wednesday.
The Cobras haven’t been in action since 23 December and will do well to shake off the cobwebs nice and early up in Centurion. They did score a cracking victory over the Warriors in Oudtshoorn where Pieter Malan’s 116-ball 84 and George Linde’s figures of 9.1-1-47-6 downed the hapless Warriors on a turning wicket.
Verdict: Multiply Titans 53/100
The Titans should be far too good at home for the Cobras who haven’t played any cricket since just before Christmas. Decent value on the hosts here at 53/100 – one to add to all of your weekend multiples.
Knights vs Lions | Friday 5 January 2018 | Diamond Oval, Kimberley | 13:30
To Win Match
Knights 92/100 | Tie 35/1 | Lions 92/100
Next up we head off to the Northern Cape as the VKB Knights look to for their first victory of the season when they go up against the bizhub Highveld Lions. The Free State franchise have only played once this season in a very under-whelming performance against the Titans on 22 December.
Nicky Boje has named a pretty strong squad with the likes of Marchant de Lange, Eddie Leie, Ryan McClaren, David Miller, Duanne Olivier, Rudi Second and Shadley van Schalkwyk all included. They’ve got a gun side but need to start getting results lest they want to endure yet another underwhelming limited overs season.
The Lions on the other hand were poor against the Titans on Wednesday evening. Terrible fielding and a poor batting display saw them fall 32 runs short of the Titans’ 264. Geoffrey Toyana will be most annoyed with his middle order, all of whom managed to get starts with nobody able to push on and get the big score required for victory.
Verdict: VKB Knights 92/100
This looks as though it’ll be a very close match as the betting suggests. I do, however, think that the Knights shade the Lions here. The Free State franchise boast one of the best sides in the competition and should get the job done against the men from Gauteng.
Warriors vs Dolphins | Friday 5 January 2018 | St George’s Park, PE | 13:30
To Win Match
Warriors 1/1 | Tie 35/1 | Dolphins 82/100
Lastly we’re off to Port Elizabeth as last year’s losing finalists go toe to toe with their East Coast rivals at St George’s Park. You never quite know which Warriors side is going to pitch up on any given day, with their two matches this season highlighting their inconsistency.
They opened up brilliantly against the Lions at the Wanderers with a massive six-wicket win before a woeful display against the Cobras saw them skittled for 175, falling to a 67-run defeat three days later. Having said that, they almost always perform well at home and will back themselves in Port Elizabeth where batting is difficult at the best of times.
The Dolphins would have been disappointed not to have gone two from two. A magnificent 26-run over the Cobras in their opening match was followed up by an agonising last ball defeat against the Lions in Potchefstroom.
The big worry for Grant Morgan will be absence of Vaughn van Jaarsveld who dislocated a finger in training. His place in the side will likely be taken by Sarel Erwee who will be desperate to recapture the form which saw him blast a century in the opening match of the Ram Slam T20 Challenge against the Cobras.
Verdict: Hollywoodbets Dolphins 82/100
It’s so difficult to call a match like this. I like the Hollywoodbets Dolphins side on paper but you never quite know how well the Warriors are going to play. Err on the side of caution here and back the Dolphins to claim the points.
