A fine 138 from Vaughn van Jaarsveld at the top of the order for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, helped his side take a 78 run lead into the third day of their 4-Day Franchise Series clash with the Warriors at Kingsmead on Tuesday.
Sarel Erwee and Van Jaarsveld started the day on 64 without loss and took the Dolphins past the 100 mark. The total was 110 when Erwee fell, caught behind for a patient 44.
41 runs later Cody Chetty departed for 10, a good catch at short leg, and the Dolphins were 151/2, trailing the Warriors by 24 runs.
Van Jaarsveld and captain Zondo took the Dolphins close to the Warriors' first innings score before Zondo was bowled by Anrich Nortje for 10.
It was with Senuran Muthusamy that Van Jaarsveld went to his 19th first class hundred off 160 balls which included 17 fours and one maximum.
"Opening the batting now is a new adventure for me and it was satisfying to get some runs under the belt after a poor game in Kimberley," Van Jaarsveld said.
"I’m chuffed to get some good runs here now and I hope that I can continue the form."
Muthusamy was the fourth wicket to fall for the Dolphins with the score on 176, a lead of one run, caught behind for three.
Dane Vilas and Van Jaarsveld then got busy at the crease building a lead for the home side.
Van Jaarsveld's epic innings was the next to come to an end when he was caught at mid-off for a mature and well-played 138 off 209 balls with 22 fours and a six on his card.
The Dolphins were 221/5 with Vilas and Sibz Makhanya together at the wicket.
50 runs was the outcome of their partnership and they added some more impetus to the Dolphins innings, Vilas ended on 38.
Makhanya was joined by Rob Frylinck who enjoyed taking on the Warriors second new ball bowlers. The big all-rounder scored a brisk 23 from 16 balls.
The impressive Makhanya, along with the last three wickets, added 34 runs as he went to his second half century of the season.
He finished on 54 not out and the Dolphins' innings came to an end on 335.
In the 21 overs that the Warriors had to bat for they lost Eddie Moore early for seven when he was caught behind off Frylinck.
At the close of play the Warriors were 82/1, still trailing the Dolphins by 78 runs.
