It is clear to most who have seen Colin Ingram play of late that the former Proteas batsman has really developed his white-ball game in England.
It is that progression that has seen him sold for a whopping sum at the Indian Premier League auction. Ingram was bought for approximately R12.9 million and will be headed to the Delhi Capitals (formerly the Daredevils).
Since moving to Glamorgan on a Kolpak deal back in 2014, Ingram has been a big part of the Welsh club's white-ball teams. Ingram is the limited-overs captain of Glamorgan and his talents have also become sought after in T20 leagues all over the world.
Ingram has turned out in the Big Bash League, Pakistan Super League and Caribbean Premier League and has also had a previous stint in the IPL with the Daredevils.
The fact that the Capitals, who already have the services of Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw and Colin Munro secured for 2019, would splash out such a big sum to bring the 33-year-old batting all-rounder to Delhi shows what high esteem he is held in. The Sunrisers Hyderabad were also dead keen on Ingram and engaged in a bidding war that drove the fee paid for him through the roof.
Ingram comes with a wealth of experience and a reputation for being somebody who can adjust his game according to the match situation.
He was integral in the Adelaide Strikers winning the 2017-18 BBL and will captain the franchise at the outset of this season's Aussie T20 showpiece, while Travis Head is away on Test duty.
Ingram has worked hard on developing his explosive strength in order to be a force in white-ball cricket. He recently posted part of his fitness regime on Twitter to the delight and confusion of cricket fans. Ingram has looked to develop his hitting power by brutalizing a tractor tire with a sledgehammer. He revealed that due to his small stature, he has to find different ways of getting power behind the ball to clear the fence.
This out-of-the-box thinking from Ingram portrays a consummate professional bent on improving his game in any way he can. That has shone through in his results on the field and is something that the Capitals are more than happy to pay to have in their group.
Ingram may be lost to Proteas cricket but he is a great credit to the game over and above being an absolute delight to watch when in full cry.
The Capitals will reap the benefits of Ingram's professionalism, even if he doesn't light up IPL 2019, simply by exposing younger players to his shining example.
