Our tennis tipster looks at two of the tastiest clashes coming your way from the ATP Tour's Sofia Open Ro32 on Wednesday.
Marton Fucsovics 9/10 | Andrea Seppi 17/20
Hungarian Marton Fucsovics is a hard-working player who toiled away during the 2018 season. The 26-year-old perhaps lacks some of the nuance of some of his contemporaries, but his industry and grit always make him a sturdy opponent. Nominally a more efficient performer on the hard stuff, he actually defied expectations by claiming his first ever ATP title on clay last season. He won the Geneva Open in pretty startling fashion, accounting for the likes of Johnson, Tiafoe and Wawrinka en route to victory. The rest of the year was solid if unspectacular, with quarter-finals in Vienna and China. Fucsovics lost to Novak Djokovic in a tight three-set thriller in Sydney, highlighting his capacity to go toe-to-toe with the very best.
Veteran Italian Andreas Seppi is your typical journeyman pro. He has carved out a decent career on tour without really registering in major events: he has failed to go beyond the fourth round in Grand Slam tennis. But in typical journeyman fashion, he manages to hustle his way through the year in events such as this one. He’s actually a man in decent form, having reached the Sydney International final to start the season. He had some fair results spread throughout last season, flourishing in some of the lesser events. He reached the semi-finals of the Hungarian Open and Kremlin Cup. Add to that quarters in Halle and Germany and it amounts to a fairly decent campaign at the top level.
This will be their third meeting, with the pair meeting twice last year. Fucsovics won their last meeting in Beijing. I just think that Seppi is the man in superior form, regardless of age. He should thrive on these quick, indoor conditions, allowing him to keep the points shorter and mitigating the age gap.
Martin Klizan 9/20 | Mirza Basic 16/10
27-year-old Slovakian Mirza Basic pulled off one of the most surprising results here last season. He won the event from qualifying- which is always a rarity on tour. But one look at his vanquished foes tells you all you need to know about his performance. He accounted for the likes of Wawrinka and Kohlschreiber in a terrific breakthrough week. Elsewise, he generally found his most success on the Challenger Tour, battling to really follow up that herculean effort here. He did manage a quarter-final appearance towards the end of the year, although the Kremlin Cup is hardly what one would call an elite field.
29-year-old Slovakian Martin Klizan actually enjoyed some real highlights throughout the 2018 campaign. It really started with a brilliant run to the quarter-finals in Barcelona, where he was unfortunate enough to run into clay-court icon Rafael Nadal. He then went on to the quarter-final of the Bavarian International- I will come back to that later. He then went on to claim his sixth ATP Title at the Austrian Open. But perhaps of more import was his showing at the St Petersburg Open. He went on a glorious run that left a slew of more fancied opponents by the wayside. He accounted for Fabio Fognini, Denis Shapovalov and Stanislas Wawrinka during the St Petersburg event. So there certainly seems to be something of a mercurial quality to Klizan.
Martin Klizan comfortably leads the head-to-head 3-0. Though- as I alluded to earlier- it took him three tough sets to overcome Basic in Germany last season. But let’s not forget that this is the site of Basic’s greatest moment. I think that Basic represents better value than Fucsovics in this event.
